When I had my week 36 appointment midwife said baby was 4/5 engaged, I know it's not much so do you think he could have moved from where he was? I'm wondering coz I used to feel a big pressure between my legs when I was walking (like baby's head pushing downwards) but I'm not feeling it any more,,, I would like to hear about your experiences
I can't wait to see the midwife again on Friday to know more as I'm really worried that he might get into a bad position in the last few days

I'm not sure hun but just wanted to say I kind of have the same as you. At 36 weeks my bubs was 3/5 engaged and I felt immense pressure down below which seems to have gone now so I came to the conclusion that she has popped out of my pelvis. I haven't seen my midwife since and don't see her til next Tues. I don't know if anyone else has had experience of this?

Mine was 3/5 engaged at 35 weeks too and seeing midwife next week so hopefully I will find its stayed the same or gone even lower.

Have felt a kind of burrowing sensation really low as though baby is using its hands to burrow (thats the best I can describe it), I also felt this around 32 weeks along with pressure and aching in my pelvis and pubic area. My pregnancy book did say to expect some aching within the pelvis around this time so I think its normal.

A few weeks ago my little man was 3/5 engaged and I felt lots of pressure, I could hardly walk. Then the pressure stopped and sure enough he had popped right out. Now the pressure is back and Im off to see midwife tommorrow so I'll let you know if he is back engaged again. He bloody better be as the pain is horrendous

I was 3/5 engaged 2 weeks ago (and had a lot of pain just before that) and I'm 3/5 engaged now (and still getting a lot of pain).

Ho hum.

hello

I am 3/5 engaged too and had the burrowing sensation but it does pop in and out, baby that is, having trouble walking, more to do with hips so think she is engaged again. First babies can be un-engaged right up until labour i have heard

Daft newbie question but what does 4/5 engaged mean? I am obviously too early on to be discussing that with midwife but I am curious about it.

Baby's head is measured in fifths. So when the midwife feels for the head in the pelvis she will note down how much she can still feel and how much is in the pelvis or 'engaged' in fifths as follows:

5/5 = the head is free
4/5= head is sitting on the brim of the pelvis
3/5= the head is lower but is still sitting on the brim of the pelvis
2/5= engaged as most is below the brim of the pelvis
1/5 or 0/5= deeply engaged, they can't feel the head from above

Actually Jools you have that the wrong way round because of the use of the word ENGAGED...

0/5 engaged = 5/5 palpable (feelable) = free
1/5 engaged = 4/5 palp
2/5 engaged = 3/5 palp
3/5 engaged = 2/5 palp
4/5 engaged = 1/5 palp
5/5 engaged = 0/5 palp = ready to blast off :rotfl:

Dammit that'll teach me not to read something before I cut and paste!
