Ava-Mai Elizabeth Hammond
24th July 2010
11.26PM
6lb 12oz
I was all set to be induced on Saturday morning due to high blood pressure but i think the excitment and nerves got to Ava a little so she tried to start herself off at 2AM that morning. I had niggles every 5-7 minutes asting between 30 and 45 seconds no real pattern at all but a good sign was i started having my show which was one of the strangest things everi have to say!!
Anyhoo i rang the hospital but as nothing was really happening i was told to go in as normal at 8ish to be induced. Got to the hospital on time to be told they were full and had no beds so to go back in an hours time!! Needless to say we were not impressed to have made that journey so early but we went back after an hour to be told to sit and wait YET AGAIN until a room became free. We finally got a room around 11.30AM!!!
I had pains in my back at this point so the TENS machine was put on and it was great!!
I was left until 3PM when the midwife came to examine me to find i was just about 1cm!! So they gave me prostin to start off the induction which wasn't bad at all, although the pains did get a lot more intense soon after but they were managable.
I had Jay with me from the start of the day but we phoned my mum to come up from about 5.30PM as the pains started to take me breath slightly..plus i think Jay started to panic!
Anyway mum came and at about half 6 we called the midwife back to see if i could take soemthing for the pain to which she replied "she's not even in labour" My mum and the midwife had words as mum said she could see me contracting through my tum but the midwife was certain it was the prostin taking effect...much to mums delight my waters broke 15 minutes later!!
The pains did get quite intense at times, some made me a little scared but mum helped me breath through them and i LOVED that little boost button on the TENS!!
The midwife who was so sure of herself never came back to see us so we were not seen again until 9.40PM after change over when the new midwife came to do my obs. Mum asked her to check me over to see if i was progressing at all which she didn't want to do incase of infection but i think pain got the worst of me and we had "words" So she checked me and i was 5cm!! The exact words out of my mouth were "im not doing this for another bloody 5cm" to which the midwife replied "would you like some paracetamol?"
She then rang down to labour ward for someone to come and get me so ended up down there around 10.20PM, things really got started then!
I insisted i needed to push RIGHT NOW!! The midwife kept telling me i was too early and baby was moving down still but to get on the bed and she would check me over...i asked for pethadine as the pain in my back at this point was awful but the only way i could have it was to get on the bed! After many words exchanged and about 2o minutes the midwife went out for back-up and came back with 2 other ladies to make me get on the bed!
Just to add when i got onto labour suite i did try the gas and air, i think i had 3 puffs but made me sick straight after so was not keen at all so carried on with the TENS until Jason and mum ripped it off my back as i was complaining the batteries had died!!
I have to say the pressure at this point was awful and i had to stop my body from pushing!
I got on the bed they checked me over quickly and told me to push as i was actually 10cm!! I told them to stop lying to me and get me the pethadine but they just laughed!
I got up and bent over the end of the bed but Ava's heart rate dropped from 150 to 78 I was told to get back on my back as they would have to cut me.....getting the cut wasnt bad at all, never felt a thing but as soon as they went to do it the other midwife said to wait BUT it was too late! Ava decided everything was OK afterall and the heart rate went back to normal but the midwife down below was too quick!
I started pushing with my legs in stirups (which was so helpful to be able to push the pressure somewhere) and Ava-Mai was born 25 minutes later at 11.26PM weighing 6lb 12oz. She was placed straight onto my chest for our very first cuddle whilst her nan cut the cord and Jason stood over us crying.
I was stitched up with no problems and sent back up to the ward 4 hours later after feeding and getting cleaned up.
We came home on the Monday night and are still trying to settle in with the breast-feeding but getting there!
I will add pictures as soon as i can!!!
Sorry this is so jumbled and long!!
