My little boy has a problem. :(

About two months ago we started to notice mild wheezing. Only when he exhales, and usually it's worse in the evenings or when he's excited.
He doesn't have any breathing problems though, it's just a strange sound.

When I took him for his six month check I mentioned it to the doctor and he couldn't hear anything (it was early morning and he never seems to whieeze first thing) but he did say it's not uncommon for babies to have this (he called it an asthmatic tendancy) and I was just to keep an eye on it.

Since last Wednesday he seems to have a very light cold, and he obviously has some mucous. It's been getting worse, and were're having to get up to him at night.

Last night was hideous, I was up with him every 30-45 mins the entire night! He's just cough, cough, coughing the whole time.

He's not in any distress whatsoever, he just can't sleep. I'm sooooooooo tired.

Obviously I'm going to take him to the docs to get him checked again. I just wonder what they can do to help a baby so young......

wish us luck........

I've no idea about asthma in babies but I have it so it would be interesting to find out what the doctor says about your little one.

Good luck xx

Braydon is asthmatic, normally they wont class children as asthmatic till there at least 2.
i started realise summit wasnt rite with Braydon just before his birthday, wen ever he crawled around he would get out of breath and cough alot, then over his 1st bday he caught a cold and that was the start of a horrible 6 months out of nowhere his asthma was terrible, every time he cried walked to much etc it would trigger his asthma, and he would throw up, and i dont mean a little i mean major reach the other side of the room etc, i took him to the doctor twice a week as he was going off his food i can not tell u the amount of diffo meds he was on, he was on anti biotics almost constantly for 6 months, then he was really ill with a sickness bug and he was rushed to hospital, and waws given about 12 puff of his inhaler, normally this wouldnt be allowed but he needed, since then his asthma has been 'controllable' he now has 2 puff of 2 diffo inhalers in the morning one puff of one at lunch time and 2 puffs of the 2 diffo ones again just before bed he also has special salts in his bed time milk.

i hope ur LO is ok hun and just advice if ur worried dont let them fob u off, u know ur bbay best, if u need to tlk etc im always here

Thanks ever so much. I'm taking him tomorrow as the surgery was shut today (the pedeatrician recently died  so they've got a bit of a backlog.) I'm taking him tomorrow.

He's still coughing and wheezing, but he really doens't seem to be in any discomfort. He won't sleep for more that 40 mins at a time though.

I've put a pillow under his matress for tonight, I really hope we can get some sleep.

Will report back on how he gets on.

Poor Braydon, I really hope his asthma gets better over time

Tom had a bad cough and cold a while ago and, since I'm asthmatic, I took him to the doctors. They said they couldn't diagnose asthma until they're older like Sarah says.
We were given a Ventolin for him though plus a 'spacer' thing especially to help babies take the puffer.
The other thing you could do if his cough is bad is to take him in to the bathroom, shut the door, and run a hot shower. The moist air should help.

How did you get on at the doctors? DS has a cold and is very wheezy, sounds like a baby darth vader at the mo! He's always sounded quite chesty but sometimes is worse than others. I am going to take him back to the doctors this week, just wondering how you got on on Friday?

Hope you've managed to get some more sleep and he's feeling a bit better :)

How did you get on with the GP? I hope by now your LO is a bit better and also that you've had more sleep.

My 17 year old is asthmatic and was diagnosed with it at a year old. He wasn't well as a child but is much better now (*touch wood*). Lots of sports helps. Anyway, he was put on Intal and Ventolin puffers through the spacer at 3 years old.

He also suffered badly with Croup and every time he had a cold it went to his chest. Could your little one have Croup do you think?

If it is Croup or a bad heavy cold I second the advice about taking them into a steamy atmostphere. I actually slept in the bathroom with my eldest on quite a few occasions just so he could get some relief. He was in hospital at 4 with the Croup. After that we bought a steam machine and used that in his bedroom.

Please persist with the doctor if they don't seem to do anything. It was only a chance conversation with an asthma nurse at a party which got my son diagnosed properly. As someone else said - you know your child better than anyone so don't be fobbed off.
