Arrogant consultant - arrgh!

Sorry but I just need a rant. I went to see my consultant today and enquired about a water birth. She told me I wouldn't be able to have one as it's not possible with an epidural. I have said all along that the last thing I want is an epidural as I have a longstanding injury to my back and I trusts anaesthetists about as far as I can throw them afte being given an overdose of anaesthetic a few years ago that nearly killed me. She just presumed that I am going to have one - They have also ruled out a home birth. I'm really worried that when I do go into labour that I'll meet the same attitude which is why I wanted to stay away from the hospital.

i would explain your situation to another midwife and get her to talk to the consultant, maybe he got you mixed up with someone else//

Dont take that negative attitude! and speak to someone else and speak to them about your wishes and what yopu hope to achieve for your labour and babys birth.
Why dont people listen to what we want, and just assume???

I've since found out that I can't get a water birth anyway as the pool at the hospital is out of action indefinately. So it will just have to be fingers crossed that whoever I deal with when I go into labour is a bit more understanding about my fears.

Oh dear... how about hiring one and taking it in with you - will they let you do that?

Don't give up with your ideas for your birth. You have a right to request whatever you want within reason. If there's no medical reason why you have to have an epidural I can't see the problem with a water birth (so long as you can take a pool to the hospital or have one at home).

Stick to your guns. Like someone else said - see if you can get some of the MWs or your GP on your side.
