ARGH - can I still use my girls name?!

My cousin just had gorgeous twin girls on Wednesday and called them Isla and Isabella.

We're team yellow but DH and I have been set on Isobel as our girl's name for about 4 months so have to admit my heart sank a bit when I saw their names!

Do people think that if we end up having a girl we can still use Isobel? As background, I haven't seen my cousin in about 10 years and DH has never met her...my family is split all over the country I'm now based in Edinburgh, my cousin's based in Manchester and then the remaining family is in Kent/Surrey/Hampshire and we rarely get together since my nana died.

I imagine it might get the family talking to have such a similar name and I always care too much about what people think, but equally I don't want to not use a name we both love when I'm unlikely to see them very often.

Fingers crossed for an easy life we have a boy now lol but thoughts please!

I say go with what YOU want. If someone wanted you to call your daughter 'barbie' (no offence to anyone with that name) would you? Works the other way too - if someone DIDNT want you to call your child something, doesnt mean you have to listen to them either.

Isobel is a beautiful name.

Go with what you and your hubby like. It's a name you will hear for the rest of your life so you have to be happy with it. If ppl dont like it, then its their problem

Not a problem at all as far as I'm concerned. Isla and Isabella are fairly similar anyway, so I just see it as three names that have a similar feel to them. All are fairly popular at the moment and don't think it would matter even if you lived on the same street and they were going to be in the same class. Me and my cousin have a kind of variant of the same name and I like it. Go for it! xx

We have an Amelie and bro and SIL recently had a daughter and fell in love with Emily. They didn't use it because of Amelie and it would be confusing at Xmas etc, but I said they should go with what they want. It's their daughter!

My Great Gran was called Isabella and she called her daughter / my Gran, Isobel . To me they are different names so I'd go for it! At least your cousin didn't do what mine did and give the same first and middle name that you wanted!

I am hoping that Isabella will be a middle name if we have a girl but still need to get DH to approve that one x

I'd still use it. If you saw your cousin regularly then it'd be different.
We nearly called our LB Gregory, even though I have a cousin Gregory. Although I haven't seen him in about 20 years!

Personally, even if someone close in my family/a friend went for exactly the same name, I would carry on and name my baby what I wanted regardless!

In your case, you're geographically distant from your cousin, and the name you like is similar but not the same as her babies' names, so it's not 'copying'.

So absolutely still go for Isobel, it's a pretty name and your baby deserves to have a lovely name that you both like

I actually had Elizabeth on my short list and that is my cousins name (first cousin, not seen her in about 15 years though - my Mum sees her sporadically though)

No-one batted an eyelid when I mentioned using this name.

Slightly different situation of course but if it's someone you don't see often it wouldn't put me off using the name

If we have a girl she will have the same name as my Aunty... Purely because I like the name, no centimental reasons! Absolutely do what you want, it doesn't matter if there are similar names in a family xx
