... HV keen for you to drop the lunchtime bottle?

Layla has been on 3 x 7oz bottles plus 2-3oz in her porridge for breakfast. I must stress though that this is what I give her... she doesn't always finish the bottles. In fact, over the last 3 weeks I'm lucky if I can get her to have 4-5oz of any ONE bottle!

Anywho, back in Wales I was always advised to give MILK FIRST as babies still need and get most of their nutrition etc from their milk. So this is what I have been doing for breakfast and lunch and then she doesn't have a tea time bottle - the last bottle she has an hour- hour and a half after her tea ready for bed.

So I had an indepth chat with my new HV who basically said to drop the lunchtime bottle! Also to increase Layla's food intake as at the moment in terms of quantities she is having equivalent of half a stage two jar of savory food followed by a third of a stage two pudding or fromage frais pot.

The HV seemed quite shocked at how "little food" Layla was having (whereas back in Wales at times the doc said I was feeding her too much! and the HV felt that it was more than adequate :wall2: )

Anyway, bottom line of it is really is that the HV has told me that I should be giving Layla a FULL Jar of savoury followed by a pudding (although not sure if I could give her a full pudding jar aswell so at the moment she is just having half). Layla is however, polishing the lot off but her milk intake is still suffering.

They say they need a pint of milk each day (20oz). I'm lucky at the moment if I can get 15oz in her and that's including her milk in her porridge :wall2:

Any ideas? What do your HV's say? I do make a lot of homemade food for Layla too but until I get sorted on these darn quantities I'm finding it easier to use the jars at the moment.

I have been invited tomorrow to a "Weaning Class" at the local Children's centre so hopefully that will shed some more light on the situation. If I get any useful info from that then of course I will pass it on to you all :) xx

we went to a dietician appt when joshua was approx 8 months.....at that point he was on 3 meals a day plus 2x8oz bottles and she said they would have expected him to be on 3 b ottles of that amount until approximately 1 year old....
X

It's madness how contradictory the system is huh? Previous HV would expect 3 bottles whereas now with my new HV they see no problem with and expect you to drop the lunchtime bottle especially now Layla is on 3 decent meals a day. HV's words... "Milk is a FOOD for a baby therefore you are feeding them a "x"oz bottle and then feeding them again with solids after that!" It's a good way of looking at it but still worries me about the lack of milk intake at the moment. I still get the healthy start vouchers so when my next lot come through I have been told to take the voucher in to them to pick up the vitamins for Layla to have as a top up because she is on less milk now... (also get vitamins for myself too which apparently I should have been taking since I gave birth! :wall: ) xx

yeah its crazy all the conflicting advice! we just kept joshua on 2x8oz bottles and then introduced loads of stuff high in calcium to supplement himx

Think that is what I am going to do with Layla to be honest. Trouble is is that I just cannot seem to get her to take 8oz in one go... This morning for instance she had 6oz and that was a struggle - had it in two goes and then had 4oz in porridge so she is on 10oz milk intake so far. Hopefully she will have all her 8oz for bed. I'd be happier knowing she's getting 18oz a day rather than 15oz! Then she has one fromage frais pot a day too so that will bump it up a bit. Oh the stress! lol xx

just go with layla. otherwise we got advised to use his milk to make food. like custard as a desert, or make a white sauce so that its just a meal they are having but made up with their milk to boost their intake. so like your doing porridge and then we give him custard for a dessert, also dried fruit are a great source of calcium like sultanas and apricots etc also could you not bake a cake with her milk ....from what i can gather its mainly the calcium that they worry about. Also tinned fish except tuna..............

Joshua doesnt have regular milk so we had to find alternatives for him and that was what the dietician advised!

Thanks hun. Think I may have to give her lots of custard. In fact, that would go well anyway with mashed fruit etc which she has already... just an added topping for her ;-) thanks hun :) xx

I'd just follow Laylas lead hun, if she's drinking a good part of the lunchtime bottle I'd keep offering it. Sod the HVs, they all say different things to rach other.

If she'll take a bit more food I'd gradually increase it.

Oz is still on stage 1, won't even entertain stage 2 lol. He has 1 whole for breakfast them 1.5 for luch and another 1.5 for tea, as well as snacks (but they're not regular) and he's happy so I'm happy!! HV I last spoke to spluttered about it, but what can I do? It's what he's happiest with and if I force him down a different route he'll probably end up with food issues! We're too late for blw, but he'll get there in his own time!

As for milk, his intake changes everyday, but I won't make him drop a feed, if he wants he'l get!

xxxxxxx

Kieron has 3 x 8oz bottles a day (follow on milk) plus porridge,1-2 stage 2 jars or equivalent (he eats a lot of our food now) 2 puddings-either yoghurt or fruit purée. Plus snacks during the day xx

I tried Oz on a stage 2 jar again 2 days ago. He swallowed the spoonful whole, got pasta stuck in his throat, went bright red trying to gag it up and I had to tip him upside down and hit his back to get it out. Was frightening. He's so not ready for it.

He keeps gagging on finger foods now too, except rice cakes, But everything else. Swallowed a massive bit of carrot whole, bit of pepper whole and biscuit piece whole and then gags it up and vomits up either whatever is in his stomach or loads of bile with it, and it's getting really distressing for us both tbh.

I'm just gonna keep offering fingers foods, but not force him into eating what we're having yet and keep him on smooth for a while longer.
