I am currently weaning Joshua onto formula so I can combination feed, but as a back up I am also still expressing at every feed. It may seem pointless but It is incase he doesn't take to the formula my supply is still there and also to make up enough feeds to leave him with someone for a while I have to do it over a week to have enough for one day! xxx

Are you eating lots of oats and taking fenugreek? That'll help your supply.

Just seen your comment on the other post. Babies bellys at the age are still very small so need feeding frequently. Are you wanting to stop bfing? Or just introduce a bottle? If you want to carry on I'd advise to stop the formula as using it will reduce your supply as when you feed bad don't pump your body will think you don't need to feed if that makes sense. You also should put the baby on the breast just because saliva helps your supply and pumping exclusively won't trick your body. If its combi feeding u want to do talk to Bev maybe as she's done it successfully for a while.

Hey pinky,

thanks or your reply, I will increase my oats intake also what is fenugreek?

I can't quite make my mind up about whether I want to fully stop breast feeding hence the reason I still express when he has formula.

The nappy I have just changed smelt foul and thats one upside of breast feeding, no smelly nappies ha

fenugreek is a herbal supplement to increase your milk production.

hi :) like pinky said you need to put baby on the breast as often as poss to keep your supply going as a pump dosent make your body produce oxytocin to make milk so if you just pump it will dry up. i make sure to feed alyssa in the night and first thing on boob alone then she has 4 bottles of no more than 5 oz and i offer breast in between these which means she usually dosent take the whole bottle lol. see what works for you, you could alternate feeds breast for one and bottle for the next but you would have to do it the same every day as if you skip feeds your supply drops and its hard to build it back up. id advise bf'ing as much as possible for the first 6 weeks at least as your supply is established then. thie glands that produce and store the milk in your breast develop during those first weeks and after that they wont go away so thats your maximum supply limit lol. if you stop before 6 weeks then less develop and your supply will have a smaller top limit and no amount of pumping or baby feeding can up it past the upper limit its capable after 6 weeks which is the main reason i combi feed as i had problems and never managed to get a decent amount going.

im happy to answer any questions or offer experience if you like hun, feel free to ask here or pm me :)

You can buy fenugreek at holland and Barrett I think. Apparently when your sweat smells of maple syrup you're taking enough. I would personally bf exclusively for as long as you can. I know it's hard work in the beginning. But it really gets easier. I only feed 3-4 times in the daytime now. If your worried about leaving baby just make sure u give a bottle of EBM a day.

Hey Bev,

Thanks for the advice hun, Joshua is nearly 9 weeks old so my supply has now been established, I am breastfeeding in the night and sometimes in the day, sometimes il express and then feed it him and if there wasn't enough in the bottle give him a top up. I may try the fenugreek, he has 1 bottle of formula a day and 70% breastfeed and 30% expressed milk in a bottle so not too bad hopefully. xxx

id bf every opportunity you get hun so your supply wont drop, expressing wont keep it up but babys saliva will x

Il do that and things should be fine. What formula did you use?when or if you are still combination feeding? I got aptamil seen a few ppl say its recommended xxx

i use aptimil, have combi fed from 5 days old and still do now. 4 5oz bottles a day and bf feeds on demand in between. i do night feeds and 7am feed solely bf and treat the other feeds like snacks in between bottles usually before naps when shes a bit ratty or when she wakes up if shes hungry.

He usually has 3 oz of breast milk and 5oz of formula, one thing I keep doing is forgetting to put my pads in after ive expressed went out for tea for fathers day and when I got back to the car realised I had big leak marks on my dress ha xxxx

Expressing can keep a supply up as that's how mums of sick babies manage. The important thing with pumping is doing it often enough and that is what will keep your supply there but if you are expressing every feed sounds like u have it sorted but don't go longer than 6hrs inbetween expressing and try and get 8-10 expressing sessions in 24hours (if exclusively expressing) obviously if u feed too u don't need to express that frequently its all about stimulation. What is good is to masage your breasts prior to expression to help get oxytocin up (or have skin to skin with Lo)
