Any vets out there?UPDATED 7/04

Sorry hun, not a vet but work with animals. Blood in poo means trip to the vet (there are LOTS of things it could be)

Hope the little fella is ok (is he otherwise bright, alert and eating - all good signs)

Ditto the above, Blood in faeces always means a trip to the vet as it can be poisoning, liver or kidney problems amongst other things.

Take dog to the vet im afraid...

Hey, im a Vet nurse

Tbh it could b a number of things, they can get this if they have just moved into their new home and its v stressful etc. I would still take the pup to the vet to be 100% sure.

What breed is the puppy? what area is the puppy living? Is it still eating, drinking ok??? not lathagic (sp) acting like a normal puppt should??
Does it cry out in pain when it passes poo???

Sorry for all the questions xxx

It's not always terrible news, our kitten had some once after diarrhoea (sorry!). We went to the vets of course and he wasn't concerned at all, and thankfully, it turned out to be nothing :)

If its a new puppy it could be any number of reasons. I doubt something like colitis though. And cancer seems to be unheard of in such young dogs. Does the pup have any other symptoms or problems? One of my dogs suffered colitis for years and never had any real problems other than bloody loose poo every now and again, usually after she had eaten something she shouldn't have  It certainly never proved fatal, just unpleasant on occasion.

TBH puppys are dustbins and can pick up bugs or rubbish and so on. I'd take the pup to the vet tomorrow but don't panic and fear the worst yet. If the pup is eating and drinking and does not seem distressed then please try to reassure them.

Could the pup have eaten something they are not aware of. They should keep it on a bland diet and not give it anything else.

How long have they had the pup. Is it wormed. Has it been out anywhere new in the past day or so? If its a new pup chances are it'll settle down. Our new dog was stressed the first day or two and refused to poo or wee at all for a day. Day 2 he finally did a proper wee and day 3 he did a poo. His feed had to be changed slowly as he bowels could not cope with a total change straight away, so he had a few nasty poos to start off with but gradually he got used to his new diet and has been fine since. Is your grandparents pup had time to adjust to its new diet? That would cause an upset tummy if the dogs diet changed dramatically and it did not have a gradual change.

Erm not a vet or vet nurse, just someone with lifetimes experience of dog keeping along with goodness knows how many other animals.

thanks for all your replies

puppy has been wormed
is happy
eating well
they have had her nearly a month now and been using the same food since then
its a west highland white terrier
doesnt seem to be in any pain

I'd not worry overly atm then :) But get her checked out tomorrow if she is still showing blood in her poo or seems altered/distressed.

She may just have eaten something that disagreed with her and her poo may be fine tomorrow.

Let us know how they get on :)

Well they took puppy to vets today. Turns out the worming syrup they had been using wasnt very good so the vet gave some better worming tablets. Hope thats the end of it! thanks for all your advise

Ah thats good to know its worming treatment. Hopefully its better today :)

TBH the best wormer is from the vet. The stuff from shops I wouldn't bother with. I pick my wormer up from the vets once every 3 months and my dogs never have a problem.
