Hi ladies,
Thought I'd write up my birth story whilst Amelia sleeps. As most of you know, I was due to be induced on Tuesday 28th January due to Obstetric Cholestatis.
I went into hospital for induction at 1630 to be put straight in labour suite for a pessary that lasted 24 hours, this was supposed to ripen and soften my cervix over the 24 hour period. I then moved up to a ward to monitor any pains or tightenings. Absolutely zilch happened apart from lower back ache. The midwife then asked me to take out the pessary and said I might have a show, again nothing! I then had regular monitoring of baby and regular obs etc. That night I went back to the labour suite where the doctor said I was 1cm dilated. Then we went to talk through the next step which was having the gel inserted for a 6 hour period. The gel was then inserted and all I got was again absolutely zilch. I was beginning to get really fed up and impatient now and I really had no idea what was to come...
After the gel had been inserted I was again examined and was told, again no further progress & the next step is for the doctor to break my waters and put me on the drip. Oh my, I was not happy with this! A male doctor broke my waters & put me on the drip, which was horrendous. The aim is to steadily increase the the contractions but I was in absolute shock. Anyway, after breaking my waters I began to get contractions which were very painful, especially walking around. I reported back to the doctor who said I may not even need much drip. By this point, I was desperate for any twinge. After 4 hours, the doctor examined me and I was 4cm dilated & told to keep going. By this point the contractions were extremely painful and I was in agony. I had gas & air and a diamorphine injection. After another 3/4 hours I was then again examined and was 6cm dilated, this is where it went downhill. Baby's heartbeat was very irregular, my temperature was 38.6 and my pulse was 150. Doctors were extremely concerned about my state as I was also being sick and eventually lost 2 pints of vomit. They had to give me two fluid drips to rehydrate me again. Also, by this point I'd asked for the epidural which definitely is worth having and saved me alot of pain. I was crying, being sick & depressed due to the pain, especially as it is so forced.
Doctors were very concerned at this point & told me they'd check me early hours to see if dilated anymore(I hadn't) I was told to prepare for an emergency caeserean. I was relieved this was an option as even if I'd have dilated, I wouldn't have been able to push as I was extremely done in. I have never felt so ill in all my life. Anyway, early hours came & wait & no further dilation so I signed the consent form for a c section. I was on top of the world I would meet my baby girl soon. We went to theatre and my oh was brilliant, she was brilliant from the start. Within 10 minutes of my stomach being cut, we met Amelia race Elizabeth. She w eighed 8 pound 2 ounces and was born at 02:19 on 31.1.2014. She let out the loudest cry and it was the best moment ever. She had a breastfeed for an hour straight after birth too. Unfortunately she is on antibiotics as from my high temperature & pulse they think I have an infection so I can't leave the hospital until Tuesday when my blood's come back.
I've attached a picture, I just love her.
