How long does it take for alcohol to be out of the system so it's safe to breastfeed again? Just been having a discussion with a friend and neither of us knew! I seem to think it's 24hours but remember someone saying your body renews itself within a few hours or something - but surely that can't be right?

Im sure I heard it's like drink driving, an hour for every unit consumed, not 100% though xx

If you have a little bit of alcohol your milk should be fine, your body will only take goodness out of you for baby before offering the badness iykwim? So a glass of wine or cider would be ok, but if you go on a bit of a bender your body has no chance of filtering the goodness out because it is overcome with toxins.

Even though I was told this by someone who knew what tthey were talking about I still didn't have any alcohol til my son was 7 months old and I wasn't going to be feeding him for at least 3 hours lol

I've been buying one of the mini bottles of red wine a week and drinking half on a Saturday and half on a Sunday and even then it takes me all evening to drink.

I will have a glass of wine and still feed him, I go on the 'same as driving' theory where if i'm sober enough to drive I can feed him, if not then I would have planned it and expressed some for him to drink. It does get clensed out of your system so you don't need to get rid of tainted milk or anything. Only if you go on a real bender would I pump but thats just as it will take so long to purify that your boobs are going to be full and start being uncomfortable.
I generally have a small glass of wine or spirit a few times a week.

Thanks for the replies. Reason I ask is that I've got a friends birthday coming up in April and everyone's going into town for drinks after a meal. I don't mind not drinking - I was going to just do the meal then go home, but I do actually fancy going out. Obviously my Noah comes first, but I wondered if it would be at all possible if I could have a bit more to drink then just 1 glass of wine. And if I did, how long would it be until I could feed him without it dangering him and going through to him.

I don't think there's an exact time scale. The 'driving theory' tends to be what most people use. If your worried it might be worth expressing for a couple of extra feeds to give you a bit longer.

I think as long as you don't go on a complete bender you should be ok. Xxx

I have a white wine spritzer (about half a normal glass of wine, and lots of soda water) most nights now, I make it like a long drink rather than wine glass and I get the taste of the wine but a drink that lasts for my whole meal
