Hi All,

My partner & I have decided to try for a baby.
I have been on the pill for over 10 years, one of the reasons for me going onto the pill was to make my periods regular, my body never seemed to have a normal cycle so the pill really helped.
Now I have just finished taking my pill and obviously will have my period then hopefulyl my body will sort its self out, however I am worried this may not happen as my body never seemed to get into a regular cycle before.
Has anyone else experience this? Can I stil get pregnant without a normal period?
Worried!

Thanks
Sarah

There are lots of lovely ladies on here who are similar and will be along to help but...book an appointment with your gp to discuss this thoroughly and get yourself "on record" so to speak and you will find it easier in future if you need to start discussing clomid or anything like that.

Very best of luck to you and welcome to the forum. Xx

I was on the pill for 10 years too and mine returned to normal pretty much straight away. My first proper period was about 34 days and then after that between 26-29 days. I was regular to begin with but I did have heavy painful periods before the pill and now I'm off the pill 10 years later I have light and bearable periods, so it could be that your body changes while on the pill. Just my opinion though, I'm no doctor lol x

My cycles have also been all over the place, I find it helps to use an app, I have an app called Clue, you fill in the data and it brings up your average cycle length, mine is still all over the place but the app does adapt. The more data you put in the more accurate it becomes with dates etc.
We are still trying to conceive, have been trying for a while now and I'm hoping this month of us been relaxed about it and doing the deed every second day might finally get us pregnant. You could always use ovulation sticks to pin point your fertile days but you might end up using loads and spending loads if those days change due to your different cycle lengths . The cost is one of the reasons I've stopped tracking mine and hoping dtd throughout the cycle might help us.
Good luck and try not stress over it.

Hi Sarah,

I was on the pill for 13 years before I had my son, I went on it originally due to painful and irregular periods. I got pregnant with my son first month of not taking the pill, I can't remember how long that cycle was but I definitely didn't ovulate on day 14.

Now ttc number 2 and my periods and still all over the place. As previous posters said no reason can't get pregnant if there is t another issue it's just harder to pinpoint ovulation, me and my husband are trying to have sex every 2-3 days to make sure we don't miss the egg but this is hard to sustain so sometimes every 3-4 days.

The annoying part is long cycles means less chances each year, in 7 mo the being off the pill this time only had 3 periods.

I've started acupuncture to try and help with regulation, only started last week so no idea if will make a difference but will let you know!

Good luck for your journey and try to stay positive x

Thanks all for the advise.

Just finished my last period after taking the pill so let's see what happens!!!

I have bought some ovulation sticks to try and help, but no idea when to test as no idea when my period will be lol.

This might be tmi but...cm (cervical mucus) is a good way of knowing when you're fertile. It will have a few days of the month, usually around mid cycle, where the discharge from the vagina, your cm, becomes clear and watery. That's when it's at low fertility. The next stage is ewcm (egg white cervical mucus) and it has the feel and appearance of raw egg whites. It is stretchy and can stretch 4-5cm between fingers when you test it. This is when you're at your most fertile. It is the cm that is produced to assist the journey of sperm through the vagina which is acidic, through the cervix and up into the tubes. Any clear, watery cm can be fertile, the ewcm is the most fertile.

Xx

I know it's easy for me to say this and you're obviously excited about trying, but I would hold off on the ov sticks for one cycle, just till you have a bit of an idea what's going on. It's VERY easy to become obsessed with opks and very quickly become disillusioned with TTC when it doesn't happen as quickly as you wanted it to. I don't mean to piss on your flames because I do get how exciting it is. But I also was on the pill for many years and went on it for similar reasons to you and it was a long and incredibly frustrating and emotional 15 months before finally conceiving my baby boy. I hope it's not like that for you, but I would at least give your body a chance to return to "normal" (whatever that is!) before going in all guns blazing with ov sticks. Best of luck ttc xx
