Advice please, 6 week scan - what to expect???!!!

Hi there,
I was 6 weeks pregnant yesterday 16th April! I am having PMS type symptoms and cramps in my lower back which im guessing is a good sign!

I have made an appointment with BUPA tomorrow for a 6 week (private) scan, costing 100 pounds.

Can you please tell me what to expect? will there be a heartbeat yet? will they give me a printout to keep? will it put me at ease?

Hiya, I had my first scan at 7 + 6 and could see the heartbeat, but I'm not sure if at 6 weeks you'll be able to see it. I would check with them first before you spend £100 and they may advise you to book a week later x

i had first scan at 6weeks 2 days n we cud see heartbeat, not alot to see otherwise!

At 6 weeks they are basically checking that it's a valid pregnancy. They will look for the sac that should contain baby and ensure it's not empty. The heartbeat appears around week 6, for some it might appear at 5w+5d for others it's 7w+2d type thing so please don't fret if they can't detect the heartbeat for you today. I had a scan at 6w5d and the heartbeat was there very strong and solid. Baby just looked like a blob there was no real shape to him but when she zoomed in he did look a little more like a kidney bean shape...the picture we got showed him looking like a blob though! Good luck with your scan, hope all goes well.

I had a scan at 6 weeks, well according to my dates I was 6 weeks but they said that I wasn't quite 6 weeks going on the size.

She tried to do a normal tummy scan first but couldn't really pick anything up as it was so small, so I had to have an internal scan which was fine.

From that we could see the sack and the heartbeat, it was like a lighthouse flashing, that’s the best way I can think of describing it.

We could have got a pic but didn't as there wasn't really anything to see.

It was great to see our bean and I'm sure you will love it.

that gives me a clear picture of what to expect
i know 100 pounds is expensive but im so impatient
i hope we can detect a heartbeat, i will let you know!!!
maybe i'll go again in 1 - 2 weeks to see what they say XX

We've had a 6 week scan and an 8 week scan. At the 6 week scan there was no heart beat to be seen - just looked like a little black splodge with a tiny white blob inside it! I had an ultrasound scan and a TV internal ('cattle prod'!) scan - both were fine and not uncomfortable.
At the 8 week scan, we were able to see the heart beating and the yolk sack - still just looked like a (slightly larger) white blob inside a black splodge though! Only needed the external ultrasound with the 8 week scan. We did get a couple of pics, but they just look like little white blobs!

Enjoy it though - even though it doesn't look like anything much now, it was still so re-assuring to see there was actually something in there!!
