we're gona be starting Kayden soon, wanted to wait til the 6 month mark, but might start 2/3 weeks early. I've bought a box of heinz smooth baby rice.

How do I start off?

How many spoonfulls, and what time of day??

I need to sit down & do a bit of research on what to do, but dont have much time lately, so I thought i'd ask you ladies.

I gave grace a spoonful (if powder mixed up) in the morning when we started. Not every day but every 2/3 days to see how it went. Sometimes she would eat it sometimes not.
I would suggest 1 new thing/flavour at a time so you can pin point anything that doesn't agree with him. They say it takes 10 tastes to decide if you like something or not so if he's not too keen to begin with don't worry and just try again another time
I don't force her, if she's not interested we just take it away and try another day.
I also give her a plastic spoon to play with and she's getting very good at getting it in her mouth every time now

Good luck! :)

I wanted to do baby led, but Kayden has severe reflux & i'm trying to take it very slowly, defo want to move onto that tho!!

Tinks - After Grace had the spoonful, was she looking for more? Did you give her more?

Yeah sometimes she did and sometimes not, she will watch our dogs etc but when she want a spoonful she'll open her mouth, didn't take her long to learn this at all. If she's not interested she'll keep her mouth closed and turn away. For the first couple of weeks I only made up 1 or 2 teaspoons of powder and didn't make up any more.
Now a month later she is having 2/3 meals per day and also likes to play with & suck finger food. I did find that baby rice was a bit bland for her and once we moved onto baby porridge she really opened up to foods

Just thought of something else, if I remember right the instructions in the baby rice say 1 teaspoon of rice to 3 teaspoons of milk but I found that far to pastey and thick to start with and I make it runnier so follow your instincts when making it up, you know how thick he's more likely to take it.

We've been weaning a few weeks now and started with breakfast....the hv recommended this...mainly because if something doesnt agree with their little tummies, you have all day to deal with it rather than all night if you start with tea iykwim :)

Good luck with weaning hun xx

Thanks for the advice ladies.

Breakfast sounds like a good idea to start off with. LO has reflux so taking it very easy with new flavours ect.

How long did you only use the rice for? I'm thinking I might do 1/2 spoonfulls once a day for 2 weeks, possibly even longer.

Does the rice get mixed with formula still? Or just normal water, soz im just being lazy I could walk into kitchen & find out - my LO is on thick prescribed formula so not sure about using that.

I did it for the two weeks but not every day, baby rice is mixed with formula

I started Jake on 2 teaspoonfuls of baby porridge around lunch time to start with xx

I started Angel with 1-2 spoonfuls of baby rice and then went onto baby porridge and I tried to do it every other day. I now do it everyday and I lift the spoon up and if she wants some she'll even open her mouth and she turns her head if she doesn't, so I just go by her and what she wants. I've tried a couple of jar foods and given her some banana which I whizzed through the blender but I mainly just stick with the porridge everyday. HV just advised me to continue with just breakfast till 5/6 months and then introduce lunch. I registered with the cow + gate website and they sent me a free book on weaning its really good x

Thanks Lauren,

I got some info on weaning when pg i'll need to dig it out. Did you find your LO was ok with the 1-2 spoonfulls, what was she doing when they were done. I'm worried Kayden will want to keep going, I used to show my eldest LO the empty bowl when she was slightly older, & let her hold it ect so she knew there was nothing left.

Kayden has his last set of jags on Weds, so i'll maybe start the following Monday, i'm really nervous!
