Hiya, me and my partner are currently trying to conceive and I've been advised by my Doc to give up smoking. I always knew I would once I fell pregnant but dont know how important it is to give up whilst you're actually trying...any advice please? My partner also smokes...so far I've gone 4 days without having a ciggie but today I feel at breaking point and would like to just cut down before stopping full stop...

i dont smoke myslef but i have read that if you or your partner smoke/drink etc regularly then it can effect things. everyone states that you need to be as healthy as possible. i am struggling with this aswell. i need to cut out some foods that are unhealthy but i just cant do it. lol. good luck. sorry i couldnt be much help. xx

it is better for you and increases your fertility, also your baby in the first 3 months is developing its vital organs so the healthier you are the better. Having said all that, most of my friends were smokers and didn't give up until they were pregnant and all was fine! I think you shouldn't give yourself any guilt trips over it, it's incredibly difficult to stop if there s no big motivation (like being pregnant). I recommend Allen Carr s Easy Way book, it's great plus he encourages you to smoke while you're reading it, which I loved! lol
Good luck x

Thank you...I am getting the tablets that stop you smoking on Monday but not sure if these are ok to take while you're trying, I'll ask them beforehand.

Good luck quitting. I will be the best for your baby when you conceive and for you for your future. I have a question about this too though. I don't smoke at all but my partner does. Is that likely to affect our chances of conceiving at all? We are currently on our third month trying.

Thanks

I think it does affect men too, they put warnings on cigarette packets about men's semen, think it can cause a low sperm count. My partner smokes too but he thinks he'll be ok because he has a 9 year old son but I've tried telling him that he's older now and not as fit so every little bit helps. I think it does obviously help and is better all round if neither of you smoke but like the lady said before, I know people, men and women that have smoked and it hasn't affected them concieving at all. My fella smoked when he got his ex pregnant and she has never smoked.

the way i stopped smoking me an oh went to nearest smoking clinic in the local area an went on from there on patches an all sorts until the right one helped an stopped the cravings.

i didnt know i was pregnant when i went off the fags but by the the time i found out i was preg i wasnt smoking gave my last 4 to me mother lol and got an appointment with smoking clinic lol.
even hubby has quit smoking with me.

the only thing ull have prob with is ur cravings an where to put ya hands because there the main things thats the bother. i used to be bored to but if u use a laptop or read books/magazines something to take your mind off it also there is will power if you smell or be tempted to smoke think of the morning your earning for when you get pregnant. All the best xx

Hi Jarjar7
I was going to ask the same thing as you and then saw your post! I am trying to cut down while we are TTC but am finding it harder than i thought. I know that if i found out i was pregnant then i would have the motivation that i need to stop completely but am finding it hard to stop without knowing if i'm pregnant or not! Feel terrible because i know that it is the best thing to do but am trying my best. Good luck - keep me informed of how you are getting on!

I just thought I would add a little idea as to what to do with your hands. It may be a little old fashioned, and I know maybe I am being a little over-optimistic, but I have started learning to knit baby bootees and to crochet a baby blanket. I have not got pregnant yet but the thought that hopefully in a year I may have some tiny little tootsies to put in the booties is really soothing to me.

Also, I personally don't smoke, but knitting and crochet it quite difficult and I find I really have to concentrate and time just flies by. Perhaps if you did that when you had a craving, it would give you something else to concentrate on and something to do with your hands! :)

Same to you Beanster! It is so hard isn't it? The thought of actually BEING pregnant will definitely give me the motivation but considering smoking relieves stress, how are you meant to give up when you're going through so much stress by not getting pregnant every month?!
I went back to Boots yesterday and they gave me another couple of things to try (lozenges not one of them though Princess81 but you are the second person to tell me they work) so I will do that. And if all else fails I'll be knitting booties like a goodun!!! Good advice Flopsy!
