I have decided to bottle feed, and as this is my first baby i dont have a clue which formula to use, i was looking yesterday and i didnt realise their were so many different ones. Does anyone have any advice at all???

I think it's just a case of trying them and seeing which your baby likes. Different babys get on with different formula.
I used SMA Gold for James and had no problems, but others have said it has made their baby constipated. I would only buy one tin to start with in case your baby doesn't like the one you choose.

Ah, muppetmummy you've made me feel better! I bought one tin of SMA Gold :rotfl: but like you littleem, I didn't have a clue what to go for so I just picked the nicest tin :rotfl:

I plan on BF but just incase doesn't 'work out' i've bought a box of Cow & Gate just so I have some formula in.

I chose C&G after reading a thread in 'Ask a Mum' about formula feeding.

Ive bought one tin of SMA gold just in case i dont get on with breast feeding. The night time feed one looks good tho, i think its cow and gate altho i was gonna compare the ingredients to see if they were much different to regular cow and gate but i couldnt be bothered lol

That's why I chose it! There was a picture of a fluffy chick on the tin and I thought it looked cute! :rotfl:

Sounds like a good idea, i'll just pick which ever one looks nicer, he he. i take it your supposed to take the formula in with you or do the hospital provide it???

I've bought a few cartons of ready made formula but I am planning on breastfeeding - its just in case I can't manage.

I bought Apitmal stuff

Hospital provide the formula.
In hospital they have these fab ready made jars of formula with disposable ready sterilised teats you screw on the top. They are amazing! I wish you could buy them
They should go over making up feeds with you before you leave so you're confident about what to do when you get home.

I bet that cost her a fortune!

boy;s been on aptamil in hossy its one of the closest ones to breast milk , he found sma too heavy and spent the next 24 hours throwing it up again after having it on the neonatel unit

I'm too scared to even mention bottle feeding to the MW's! They make you feel like a failure before you even start which is just disgusting. :?

I'm using SMA Gold... only because it's the first one that came into my head. I couldn't BF after the birth so we had to give Evie formula and she loves it. She's been doing really well on SMA and we haven't had any problems with wind, constipation or anything so far (fingers crossed!)

My advice would be to buy the sachets rather than the big tins so there isn't much waste. Or even better try the ready-mixed formula until you find the one that your baby likes.

And I was really worried about not breastfeeding but all the MW's at the hospital were really lovely and didn't make me feel bad at all. Just be prepared for the massive boobs on about day 3!!! I was parading around my lounge pretending I was Katie Price!!! Shame they were too sore for OH to play with!!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I don't understand breast feeding, why is something thats so natural so hard? It seems loads of women struggle with it. In the days before formula did women just give up and get a relative to feed their baby for them? I'm sure animals dont have as much trouble as we do, but then they seem to get it easier labour wise too!
Before I had James it never occured to me breastfeeding would be such hard work, it's exhausting!

Take no notice, we all agree that breat is best for baby but a happy and relaxed mum is best for baby too. If you can't get on with breastfeeding, or don't want to try it then stand by your guns. It's your right to choose and you should go with whatever you are most comfortable with.

Tim was a very lazy baby and despite being made to feel a failure by one of the midwives she agreed that he wouldn't latch on. I gave up after an emotionally draining 7 days and Tim and I were much happier. :)
