Hi

When my fiancee was 12 weeks pregnant we had a little incident with a cat litter poop scoop - she accidentally touched it without realising what it was. She had a slight eye infection at the time and I did notice that she rubbed her eye a few times. It was only the next day when our friend told us what is was and I feel mad that she left it there in full view and for anyone to touch. I know I may sound totally OTT here but I'm very worried. The midwife told us that cats are innoculated against toxoplasma but I've checked and apparently not. The baby is due next week and I'm so worried that the baby might have caught it. I've read some horror stories about what can happen and I feel awful.

Should we be worried? my fiancee isn't but I am, so much so I'm worried sick. Any info would be appreciated.

I think between touching that at 12 weeks and being due now at 39 weeks I'd have mentioned it to the midwife weeks back. I'm sure everything will be ok though - I'd call the NHS Helpline or call the midwife at the hospital and just check though, it will put your mind at ease if nothing else. Honestly any little thing that worries you (or her) while pregnant just lift the phone and ask the midwife (you don't even have to wait for your next appointment to roll around). That's what they are there for. You might think it's all a free service but honestly we pay for it in our taxes etc so make use of it and ask when you need to. Call now and speak to a professional I think it will put your mind at rest.

I would ask your midwife, they do say not to clean or go near cat pooh though cos there is a risk to the baby!

hope all goes ok with the birth

If she touched it a 12 weeks and is due next week then i'm sure they would have picked up on any problems by now.
I have had to clean up my mums cat poo when she was in hospital and as far as I know the baby is 100% fine.

They would have noticed soemthing by now dont worry. and in future dont let her near the cat tray!

i looked after my house cats throughout pregnancy... dont worry

as long as she washed hands throughly straight after and washed eye ou with cold water if u havnt got eye wash then im sure everything will be fine. but like someone said ring the midwife up and check with her im sure its ok. even u due soon im sure baby will be fine :)

Thanks for the replies.

We did mention it to the midwife the very next day and she said not to worry and that many people have cats. She said that sheep are more of a risk but I'm still worried. The 20 week scan checked out fine but it still niggles in the back of my head. I'm not sure if its something they would check for when the baby is born?

Thanks!

House cats carry very little risk of this disease, I was tested automatically when 1st preganant but I think that is because there are so many stray/wild cats here. The symptoms would be for your fiancee: Feeling generally unwell, fever, swollen glands, rash.

You could ask for a blood test know to test for it and put your mind at rest. My pregnancy book states that recent studies show that even if an unborn baby is infected treatment with the approp antibiotics gives an excellant chance that baby will be fine.

Hi

I think it will be fine. Try not to worry about it
