Hi ladies,

Before pregnancy I'd never experienced acid reflux or heartburn so I'm pretty out of my element here!

I'm 36 weeks pregnant and for the last week or so had what I think is severe acid reflux. Its a constant burning sensation in my throat, I feel often like I need to burp but can't and I seem to frequently have acid vomit just pop up into my mouth. Its worst when lying down and I've tried propping up and following standard advice re what to eat or not eat but none of it seems to work. It makes me feel very sick and often at night I'm lying down to sleep and keep vomiting acid into my mouth.

What medications are safe for me to take, if anything? I've had hyperemesis throughout my pregnancy and was taken off antiemetics after 9 weeks because they were actually making me more sick and I was reacting badly to them so I'm skeptical if anything will help but it's gotten to the point I can't sleep because I'm choking on acid. A lot of people recommend milk. I'm lactose intolerant so tried soy milk but that actually made it worse.

Seeing midwife later this week so will bring it up with her but please help me cope and sleep in the meantime! Thank you!

I had this all through my last pregnancy and I lived on bottles of Gaviscon. Get the Ultra stuff as it's thicker and lasts longer. I used to carry in my bag and just swig it from the bottle!!

I got through 1L every 2 weeks so I had it on prescription!!

Gaviscon is a good one to try, and rantadine is also safe in pregnancy if that doesn’t help. You could also ask your doctor for
Omeprazole

Agree. I carried a huge bottle of Gaviscon double action stuff everywhere last pregnancy lol. Also a bottle swigger haha. The looks Id get.

That will probably do you since you've never had it before. And its perfectly safe for baby. You can also get it free now my midwife told me because heartburn is classed as a pregnancy illness now. Which is great since its bloody expensive for a big bottle.

There's also a few prescriptions you can get if the gaviscon doesn't work. All free being pregnant. Hope one of those help. Acid reflux is the worst! xx
