Hello everyone,
So I'm 9w3d pregnant. Had an early scan and all was fine. I have been struck down with a cough and sore throat/ temperature and last night my husband passed me a bottle of Covonia (cough syrup). I drank the tiniest amount last night and this morning without thinking (mainly because i was desperate for some relief). The bottle said to not take for a list of reasons but pregnancy was not one.
Upon further inspection today it says to refer to full booklet for full info, where it states to check with my doctor or pharmacist. My husbamd tried to buy me more today as it was a nearly empty bottle I finished, and the pharmacist said not to take it.
My question is, has anyone else done anything stupid like this and what do you think the risk is? I am worrying myself silly about it. I had the equivilent of probably 5ml last night and a bit less this morning. I am guessing it's because it contains alcohol they advice against it? I've rang ny midwife and left a message but she's really busy so i probably won't hear back for a day or two.
Thank you
Gemma xx

Honestly I wouldn't stress about it. Most medications say not to take when pregnant because they can't ethically test whether they're safe or not. You'd need a hell of a lot of cough syrup to cause harm to the baby x

Agree with WinterWolf. A lot of the time things aren't recommended as there isn't enough evidence rather than they know it's not safe. I was on medication for a hormone imbalance prior to getting pregnant. The leaflet said don't take if trying to conceive or pregnant however the consultant was happy for me to take it and said we aren't concerned about it's safety, we just can't say it's safe as there's not enough evidence. I most likely wouldn't have got pregnant without it as my cycles were so messed up before I went on it. I stopped it once I got pregnant but they wouldn't have hesitated to restart me if I was getting any worrying symptoms. Pharmacists will always be cautious. I really wouldn't worry.

I recently had an anaphalatic attack and my epipen wasn't effective. When my husband phoned an ambulance they told me to also have some anti histamines to try ease it till paramedics came. At the hospital the consultant said the only reason the box says not to take when pregnant is because its unethical to test on pregnant women. Which is why most medicines have that warning on them.
Most are safe to take but by law they can't recommend them
