a bit of a sensitive topic - someone told me today that you can just 'develop' STDs, without necessarily any sexual contact. as far as i'm concerned STDs stand for Sexually Transmitted Diseases, meaning they are caught through sex, and not just 'born' inside of you. and when you check STD websites it says that they are passed on through sexual activity. e.g. you can only catch HIV from a person who has HIV, same for Herpes, chlymedia etc... hence the current emphasis on the use of condoms!

was this person just ignorant or am i not informed well?

Load of rubbish..except for thrush which can be both passed on by sexual contact and just developed

although.... u can catch anything, including std's from blood to blood contact..

so say you have an open wound on your finger and you touch someone elses open wound who has an std, then you can catch it..

its bodily fluids... but doesnt include saliva

yeah i was aware of the blood to blood contact. what the person was saying was basically - "you can wake up in the morning and suddenly develop an STD, whether you've had sex or not" and also, "you can develop an STD when you have sex with someone who doesn't have an STD. e.g. you can catch HIV with a non-HIV-infected person" !!!

thrush is not really considered as an STD though, it's a yeast infection. however you're right, it can be passed on through sex as well. so maybe they should have called it an STD as well?? :?

When I was a youth worker - it was classed as an std in our literature, although we were v clear about the fact that it wasn't purely an std.

HIV can also be transmitted in other ways - but is still classed as an std as well
