Hey I was just wanting everyone's thoughts on train travel and whether anyone has done a long train journey and how it went? I really want to go home to Scotland and visit my family while I'm pregnant as they all have lots of children so can't realistically make it down here or financially pay for it. It's a 7 hour direct train from London King's Cross and my parents have already said they would pay for me to go 1st class. Also they are visiting me and I will leave with them to go back so will only have to travel one way by myself.

But my hubby is freaking out about it and keeps making me feel bad for even considering it by telling me he can't believe I would put our LO in danger. I know he's more jumpy because we have had two losses but I would never ever do anything to risk any of my pregnancies and I feel a bit more confident to travel at 24 weeks. I've read up about it and everything I've found says that trains are the safest way to go but again my OH says I can't for 7 hours. I don't know how to convince him it'll be safe or whether I am completely in the wrong??? I just really want to see my sisters while I'm pregnant.

Any thoughts would be great (btw I'm not high risk and my MW has said I'm fine to travel).

Where in Scotland are you coming to? I know sometimes you can get flights for less than a train ticket? That would a lot shorter journey, I've seen some London to Aberdeen tickets for £10-£15.

In saying that I flew to US last month, and my longest flight was 7 hours, I'd imagine train would be easier than that.

Actually coming to you - I'm from Aberdeen originally! But it's a catch 22 with the hubby as he is terrified of planes so never lets me fly to Scotland and would be even more adamant with the LO on board too.

Ouch - that's not so great.

Not quite sure what would be best there. Think if you'r midwife says your ok to go, Show him some info that you've got, tri 2 is the safest time to travel. Maybe he could speak with midwife for re-assurance.

You could give him the option of you taking a LONG train journey, or a short plane one.
If you really wanna go it might just be one of those times you have to stand your ground - some battles are worth it, but only you can really decide that.

i drove from sunderland to birmingham.. on average 3.5 to 4 hour journey... not quite as long as 7 hours though. but i was stuck in traffic and did stop for toilet breaks, i think i travelled about 5hours then the same back.

LO was fine and im doing it again at 35weeks :)

If you feel ok about it and your midwife is then im sure everything will be fine. You know your body better than anyone.

Hi Hun I don't think there will be a problem as long as you book assistance for any luggage and book your seat!
I regularly drive 4-5 hrs and I've had no problems, the trains are quite nice now especially if you go virgin x x

i cant see the problem with travelling on a train, there are bathrooms, comfy seats, you can get up and walk round if you need to....they dont have sudden stops or traffic and are air conditioned. you can even buy drinks and snacks on them.

I think you'll be ok hun. Is it direct or do you change? I'm contemplating glasgow to london soon to see family before lo arrives.xx

Thanks for the advice ladies - it's a direct train so hopefully that fact and your lovely comments may help my cause. If anyone else has opinions good or bad on it would love to hear them too! xxxxx
