I was told by my HV that at Charlotte's age she should get 15-20 Oz of milk.

Now she is eating really well, mostly (!) she is having 2 oz in with cereal for breakfast, then 5-7 Oz in a bottle, just water in the day and she was having 9Oz at night but last couple of nights only wanted 6 Oz. How much does you LO have? She is having yoghurt's, cheese etc but there seems to be conflicting advice about how much milk they should have.

Oh and if she has milk during the day now it means she wont eat much and she is much more sickly.

Hi nikkif,

Happy 9 months old to Charlotte!

I have read on various websites that a baby should be taking between 500-600ml (15-20 oz) milk per day up to 1 year of age, then that volume can drop to 350ml per day. I think the reason being is that babies can be erratic eaters, and the milk ensures that they are getting enough calcium and iron into their diet. The calcium they can get from other diary products, but iron they can't.

I used to give some juice to my LO too, but these days, I feel that she doesn't drink enough milk, so I now only give milk as a drink (and even with that measure, she is only taking about 14oz a day). And she doesn't seem to eat that much in terms of solids either, but her weight gain has been on target, so it seems all is OK.

HI Nikkif

I'm sooooo glad you posted this! I thought I was the only one worrying!

Asher is basically the same age and he is also eating his solids really well. He has 3 full meals a day now, with meat, veg, the lot!

But..... he doesn't drink much milk. He has a boob feed morning and evening. And only one bottle in the day. If I give him more than one bottle he just takes like 1 oz or something really pathetic!

I'm guessing his morning breastfeed is about 4-5oz, afternoon bottle we're lucky if he takes 4-5 oz and evening breastfeed I think 6oz. So on a good day he gets 16oz, which isn't up to the pint he should be having.

He has yoghurts, cheese, etc and has milk with his cereal at breaskfast. But I'm still worried cause everyone says they should get a pint a day. He's such a good eater, if I force milk on him he'll just eat less and I don't want him to go backwards.

I think Charlotte sounds very similar. I've kind of come to the conclusion that I'm not going to worry about it any more.

Have you been given any more advice? My auntie who's a midwife, said not to worry and that every baby is different. SO half the time I don't know what to think, the advice is so conficting!

K.xx

Ryan has about 5oz in the morning and 5oz at night, no milk during the day. He's on breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks and dinner though as well as those 2 milk sessions (nursery did that routine not me, and now hes stuck in it). I just try to make sure he has a yogurt/mousse during the day to keep his dairy intake up.
My HV said that after 6 months, milk is less important than the food, as so long as you get the nutrients it doesn't matter where from, and that if he has less than recommended milk amount to include milk in his food ie mashed potato made with milk, cheese/white sauce, yogurts etc.

at 9 months hannah was only having one bottle a day but she was having loads of cheeses and yougurts so i didnt worry she was never good with milk
