Hello,

I've been lurking on here for ages and haven't been brave enough to post yet. I went for my 12 week scan on Monday - all healthy, but the midwife said the urine sample I gave at my booking in appointment had grown strep b. I'm a bit confused and shocked really as in all 3 previous pregnancies I never tested positive for this - I don't remember being tested for it if I am honest. The midwife was very vague - what exactly is strep b and will it cause any problems. They've insisted I go consultant led due to my 2nd daughter being born very slightly under 10th centile - they never insisted on this with my 3rd pregnancy. So much has changed in 6 years.

Hi Louise, I was strep b positive in my 1st pregnancy and it meant I needed antibiotics in labour. But it is something that can come and go, it doesn't cause any problems in pregnancy, it can be harmful if past to baby when born. I would definitely push against being consultant led if all your pregnancies have been fine. My 1st was born on the 7th centile, 2nd 16th centile and 3rd the 8th centile. I ended up only having extra care doing my 3rd pregnancy but that was because he was measuring below the 5th centile on scans and I had repeated reduced movements.

Thanks for your reply, I know, I'm not to happy about them automatically putting me on consultant led care. I'm going to decline it unless there is a problem with my 20 week scan or any growth issues later on. All 3 have been within a couple of oz's of each other in the 6.5lb range but OH and I are both shorties so we aren't going to make big babies

Can i be really cheeky and ask whats wrong with consultant led care? Or is it just that you dont see the need?

Think i was classed as consultant led with my 1st but for me it just meant extra appointments and tests from memory.

There is nothing necessarily wrong with consultant led but it can impact your birth. I really wanted to go to the midwife led ward for my labour for all of mine but didn't manage to in any of them due to being high risk and consultant led. With my 3rd I was trying to push for a home birth which was eventually granted by a supervisor of midwives but I still wasn't allowed on a midwife led ward in the hospital down the hall from labour ward just because I had had an emergency section for my 1st. I had a successful vbac with my 2nd and just didn't want all the extra stuff in labour for my 3rd. Unfortunately that didn't go to plan and I ended up induced on labour ward but it was nice to have the choice xx
