Hi ladies  I went for my 28 wk appointment yesterday with yet another different midwife (never seen the same one twice) and she said again that she couldn't really palpate my fundus or tell where bubs was lying because my stomach muscles are too strong  Surely this is a bit odd.

I was looking forward to hearing where the head was, feet were etc but instead got told bubs could by lying in a difficult position but she can't tell so I should start doing optimal positioning exercises. Is this normal and are these stomach muscles going to cause trouble?

I'm a little worried as I haven't put any weight on yet or got any noticeable bump so was looking forward to the reassurance that LO was growing well :?

Any advice?

Can you request a scan hun? Just for reassurance. However please don't worry. Your strong muscles will mean that the baby bump is smaller and you'll get your tone back after the baby is born so there are huge benefits.

If you really want to see for sure and they won't give you a scan on the NHS, you might think it is worth while paying for one. They are but £100 but maybe it will be money well spent if it puts your mind at rest.

I wouldn't worry too much, they couldn't tell me until I was 30 weeks then got it wrong, I knew he was head down at 26 weeks thanks to a scan.

You'll grow a bump and once the bones start to ossify you'll feel the head, bum etc. Plus you'll be able to feel the kicks and work out from there :D

Well I want to say if they were worried they'd send you for a scan but from experience I wouldn't wait for them to be concerned, if you are concerned then take it further yourself. Contact your doctors and ask to see another midwife to examine you and ask for a scan appointment to check baby is okay. It is hard when you keep seeing diferent people, its like you are starting from scratch every appointment

Go with your instincts and following it up if you are worried

I had my 28 week MW appointment yesterday and she was able to tell where LO was lying and so on but did say before she started prodding its not always easy to tell at this point and that they can still wriggle around a lot and change position and go the other way up still. So even if LO was in one place today, may not be tomorrow. And she said its not for a fair few weeks before they start worrying about position of LO for birth. So you've time yet :)

My LO was head down into my pelvis and I was able to feel the head with my fingers as she showed me where, but now I'd say LO has moved right round again as the movements I feel are different to the ones in more recent days.

I'd try not to worry too much

Thanks everyone  Feel much better and less worried about it all now. Just seem to have these moments of panic - dippy me

I think I'll see how it goes, keep and eye on bubs' movements and if I'm not happy at my next midwife appointment, I'll ask some questions then about maybe having a scan.

You lot are just sooooooooooooooooper

i'd say you were fobbed off, i have much stronger than average stomach muscles (not boasting - im a pro athlete) and my midwife was easily able to feel position at 24 weeks ,

that would be the reason why you dont have much bump though and why you wont feel hard kicks (according to my midwife anyway)

mind you even tho i know this and ive been told a hundred times it doesnt stop you worrying that the babys not growing!!

i did see a web site the other day that scared me a bit cos it said stronger stomach muscles mean the baby is held in a position that makes it harder for the head to engage, so nearer the time you should purposefully let your abs sag so the bump can 'hang out.'

I wouldnt worry about the strong abdominal muscles thing, i had this commented on many times with my daughter after years of martial arts, gymnastics, gym, horseriding and army fitness tests. The baby will make all the room it needs to grow.

And they couldnt tell the position at my 28 weeks appointment either so dont worry, it really doesnt matter at the moment anyway as they have room to move, if she was worried she would have said.

Strong tummy muscles mean a nice flat tummy after baby! :cheer:

I wouldnt worry either about strong stomach muscles, i have strongish ones too, i've hardly put any wieght on and my bump is only just beginning to show, luckily my midwife put me in for a scan because i told her i was worried, the scan was fine and baby is growing perfect, your baby will too. As long as your feeling kicks dont worry

I bet you have put weight on as well, just cant tell

Try not to worry im basically 36 weeks and ive had 2 doctors ask if he's breech this week but he must just have a bony bum as i know hes head down because of where they find the heart beat
