I have my 20 week scan next week and we are going to try and find out what we are having. To anybody that has found out the gender.. Did they tell you before, during or after they were doing their routine checks? X

I've heard a lot of differing experiences.

Some ask before the scan if you would like to know during the scan, but our sonographer was actually quite short with us. She finished doing all her checks and went to send us packing, I asked if we could find out the sex and she rolled her eyes and told us that wasn't what the scan was for. After a little moan, she eventually told us it was a boy.

I expect she was just having a bad day, and I'm sure you will have a much nicer experience. Congratulations and enjoy your scan xx

Ours asked before if we would like to know, then told us while she was doing the checks - she was lovely and double checked that we definitely wanted to know.

Mine asked at the end after all the checks. We’d already had an earlier private gender scan but she kindly spent several minutes trying to confirm what we’d been told already. We had another scan at a London hospital just a few days before but they wouldn’t confirm the sex for us which I think was due to their policies so you might just want to check what the policy is at your hospital xx

We didn't find out but in our area it wasn't part of the 20 week scan. You had to pay an extra 35 quid for a separate gender scan! Xx

When we went into our scans I just asked at the beginning if they could check to see if they could see the sex and then they told us after they had done the checks and things in fact they screen shot the pics to show us ha. It was never made to seem like an issue for them to do this

Thank everyone! I am sure at our hospital it is all part of the 20wk scan. I hope so as I have my heart set on finding out now lol. Wasn't going to to start with! I hope I get a nice sonographer. Haha, extra confirmation with a screen shot.. love it. Thanks ladies x

They didn't tell me at all, just told me they were finished with all their checks and I asked if they could see the gender. Pure luck what sort of experience you will have, but fingers crossed it's a lovely one! x

Our scanner asked at the beginning if we'd like to know and when we saI'd yes she said she'd tell us at the end

It partly depends on the position of the baby. Sometimes it's the first thing they see. Sometimes they have to work a bit to get a peek.

My sonograoher was very quiet and focused on the health checks all the way through! At the very end she asked if I had any questions and I asked her whether she was able to tell the sex - she was happy to tell me and printed me a photo (honestly I have no idea what the photo actually shows - it looks like clouds to me!).

I got the impression she may not have been so accommodating had I asked in advance / while she was trying to do the health checks!

Our ultrasound department has signs up that say you should tell them at the beginning if you want to know, and then they'll have a look after all the checks are done.

There are some hospitals now that won't tell you at all

I paid for a private scan and she asked me if I wanted to know before her checks or after, I’m not going to tell the sonographer at the 20 week scan to see if they offer to tell us the gender.
