My 17 week old LB still cannot stand tummy time. There are no signs of him lifting his head or a mini push up. He screams after only a minute and just squirms and kicks his legs. I'm trying not to get hung up on developmental milestones but it's getting a little worrying now as everything I've read has said by 4 months they should be able to lay in there tummy in a mini push up and look around. Other people's babys at baby group and massage are younger than my son and they can all do it, some are even rolling over but Reggie is just nowhere near.

Should I be worried?

My Little boy only started to enjoy tummy time when he realised he could move or roll (which he started on his back)
I think he finally stopped screaming on his belly about 5-6 months old! lol.
Now he's 9 months and sleeps on his belly all night.
If your worried mention it to your HV xxx

I honestly can't remember when it was but my LO always hated tummy time with a passion until sometime around 4-5 months one day he just did it with out crying and popped his head up.

Babies are like that, one day ou of the blue they will suddenly start doing something and never look back.

My son was relatively late with all his milestones like sitting unaided, rolling, crawling and walking. He wasn't walking until 18 months. It's hard not to compare, but honestly every baby learns and develops at their own pace. Looking at my son now compared to his peers you would neverknow !

My little boy is 7 months today and still hates it lol. He can roll both ways and is almost crawling and sits unaided. But still screams on his tummy and only lifts himself in frustration as he don't like it lol xxx

My daughter always hated tummy time. I have video of her at around your LO's age and she barely lifts her head from the floor, let alone does any kind of mini push up! Sometimes a rolled up towel placed under their chest when they're on their tummy helps and to have lots of interesting toys in front of them to keep them (reasonably) happy!

I'd try not to worry. I agree with littlemonkey. All my daughter's gross motor skills came late as well (rolling 7/8 months, sitting alone 10.5 months, standing 17 months and walking at 19 months), but at 3 years old she does everything she's supposed to do.

Have you tried having him over your knees? Or laying tummy to tummy with you propped up a bit? You could also put him on top off an exercise ball and hold onto him? Even holding them in the "colic hold" counts as tummy time.

My little girl was in a leg brace until she was 13 weeks so we did very little "proper" tummy time on the floor. In the few days after it was removed I was worried that she wasn't meeting any of those milestones...a couple of days later she suddenly was though so I don't think you need to worry :)

I panicked over the exact same thing. DS hated tummy time, and milestones were weighing on my mind.

Then someone on here gave me a piece of advice that really stuck with me.

"How many teenagers do you see walking around with their head in a cart because they never learned to hold it up?"

From that point I truly started to realise... Milestones are a wide, moving goalpost, every baby does things differently, and they'll get there when they're ready.

Try not to let it worry you hon xx

My LaceyKeo, you've hit the nail on the head!

I always remember what one of my friends said to me about my son walking late. She said it was a sign he was smart because he'd already learned that instead of doing things for himself, it was easier just to get someone else to carry him around all day!! Always made me chuckle!!

Both of my kids hated tummy time, and my daughter never rolled. She sat up at 17 weeks and did nothing else til she could walk at 12 months! Ha ha!

Little monkey that is so true! Made me laugh cos it made me think of my baby who always wins the fight with his dad who wants to sit down and hold him but baby demands he walk around holding him. Hubby loses everytime :P
