my lo is 13 and a half weeks old and bf and always hungry. bottled milk doesnt agree with him. i know they say wait till 4 months before introducing solids has any1 done this any earlier?

I think it's a bit early, unless advised by HV or GP. They say 17 weeks at the earliest really, which is when i started.

I would definitely speak to your Doc/Health visitor before weaning that early. I started weaning DD at 4 months and that is still very early, although it worked out right for us it's not a decision to make lightly.

Breast fed babies do tend to feed a lot - every 2-3 hours and a lot less for some babies. As long as baby's fine i wouldn't give anything other than breastmilk. Babies at this age tend to go throught growth spurts where they feed a heck of a lot more than usual so thats possibly a reason.

Eta - in answer to your question, ye i would def say its too early

Yes, it's too early. It's now recommended to wait until 26 weeks when the gut has had enough time to mature so you're only halfway there. If you think it's best for your baby to wean early start no earlier than 17 weeks. There should be information in your little red book. What advice has your health visitor given you?

IHMO its far too early. connor often fed every 1.5/2 hours and still does sometimes, despite being on 3 meals a day. its perfectly normal for bf babies to feed lots.

hv says i can start solids at 16 weeks but i thought 4 months was earliest any ideas? x

13 weeks is too early- it's probably just a growth spurt.

Putting all the health issues aside- the longer you hold out weaning the better- one you start you can't stop and it's a chore! I'm so lazy!

it is a big growth spurt then i think. is 4 months classed as the same as 16 weeks?

I did wean at 12 weeks BUT this was on the advice of my doctor who i went to see before i made any decisions. James was off the charts size wise from birth and it was an informed decision i made based on medical advice and he was only given a bit of baby rice until he reached 17 weeks.

I would go and see your doctor if you have any concerns.

4 months is a few days over 16 weeks which is why 17 weeks is usually the recommended minimum.

my son was 9 weeks but was bottle fed and was having 9oz of hungry baby milk every 2 hours

The woman who took over my job has a 15year old (so before all these new guidelines) and she started him on solids at 7 weeks! She said he was going through two 8oz bottles per feed so felt he was ready. He loved it.

If you think he's ready, pop to your GP and they should advise you.

17 weeks is when, thats covering calender months not 4 week months. 13 weeks is too young as babys gut has not matured properly enough for solids. Can cause problems to give anything before then.

Sounds to me like your LO is on a growth spurt as thats normal around this time. Will be wanting more feeds. Its quite normal. BF babies always feed more often as they digest breast milk quicker than formula. Formula being thicker and heavier and therefore taking longer.

I'd wait to start weaning till at least 17 weeks. And if your LO is gaining weight well on breastmilk I'd not wean then but wait as long as you can till nearer 6 months.

As per everyone else, I would definitely not wean at 13 weeks. The gut is nowhere near mature enough for food at that age.

BF babies are hungry and as Purple13 said, feeding constantly is normal, especially at your LO's age. It may be a growth spurt too right now.
