Working law while pregnant

Hi,

the law is there to protect pregnant women in the work place. I'll tell you about my situation...

i worked treble shifts which involved working nights every third week. I found that even when not pregnant i got less sleep when trying to sleep during the day and this increased when pregnant...i really struggled.

I was advised by my midwive to come off night shift. i spoke to my boss and he didn't see what the problem was (i work in an all male department). he said if I did come off nights I wouldn't get paid for it. so I did a bit of research and spoke to acas and the equal opperunities commission who both said i should get a letter from my doctor (which I did) and would still be entitled to the same pay (including my shift allowance). I told my boss and he said that the company would probably not pay it. he spoke to someone higher up and they said I would stay on the same pay. I'm now working shifts which don't include nights but getting paid the same.

My job also involved lifting and stretching and handling chemicals. Both of which I no longer do.

If you do come off nightshift or make changes to your working day when pregnant your employer has to offer you alternative work where possible on the same hours and pay or suspend you on full pay for as long as needed. you are aslo entitled to time off for appointments concerning your pregnancy on full pay.

Try and get a letter from your doctor as they have to give you one if you ask. you can't go on as you are. it's not good for your health if your not getting enough sleep.
