I've been told by my dostor that I will see an obstetrician at the hospital rather than just a midwife as i have hypothyroidism. Does anyone know if this means I will get seen more frequently or have an earlier scan? In Southampton you don't usually get a scan until 20 wks.

i had my last baby in southampton, and i only got a scan at 20 weeks, i found southampton quite useless with every thing, can u not go to winchester or some where closer?

they cocked up so many things and stressed me out throught out all my pregnancy, how ever if u get desperate for a scan they is a private place in pompey doing them

If you have a condition they have reconised, then yes they should offer and give you better care.. its worth asking them about a scan at 12 weeks though if you only have one at 20 weeks..

I will ask. I'm seeing my dr on tues but I've got a feeling you don't even get a booking in app with midwife until 12 wks, it might be different for me though. It's such a worry, having read that low thyroid hormones can cause miscarriage, birth defects and stillbirth. Obviously i am taking thyroxine but apparently pregnancy can cause your needs to change quite early on, and if you're not taking a high enough dose then baby will be deprived of vital hormones. my doctor didn't seem overly concerned when i spoke to him on the phone but they never do.

Southampton General DO do a 12 week scan mine has been booked already. I am not delivering there as they are awful like a baby conveyor belt but i am going to Ashurst, have you heard about that one?

Really? When i had my daughter in 2006 they only gave 20 wk scans then. I haven't heard of Ashurst no, is it a hospital or a birthing centre, and do you have to live in the new forest?

Try not to worry - I have thyroid issues to - as long as your levels stay OK the baby comes to no harm - they just need to keep a close check on your blood levels through the pregnancy as your requirements can change.

I would take advantage of the consultant/hospital led care - you are likely to get more scans and closer follow up as well as seeing your midwife at normal times too!

Thanks for that Sal. My thyroid is a mess, happened after the birth of my daughter last year. I am already on a very high dose 175 mcg per day, the worrying thing is my symptoms are creeping back, hair loss, aching limbs, extreme tiredness. I've had my bloods done should get results soon, just hope no damage has already been done.

You get a 12 week scan at Winchester now as well as at 20 weeks and I believe the maternity unit has a very good reputation.

When i had dd in march 2006 it was standard in Hampshire to only get a 20 week scan. The rules have now changed and a 12 week scan is offered as normal. Great news!

Ashurst is a birthing centre the same as Hythe and Romsey were and is taking over from Hythe Romsey and Lymington units. There will be 12 beds and if its like hythe it'll be like being in a nursing home, its not at all hopsital like. The only thing is they dont offer epidurals as not a hospital. But they can do gas and air, pethidine and water births. and no you dont have to live in the new forest, i dont.

Where abouts in hants are you im in southampton nr j 3 of m27.
