Ryan has always been a skinny baby, at 7 months he dropped right down and was almost off the centile chart. We had him weighed last night at the hospital (although it wasn't very accurate cos they used adult scales with me holding him and then just deducted my weight  ) but anyway, according to that he's now on the 25th centile.

The thing is he's just so skinny, he has no fat on him at all and you can literally see his ribs and shoulder blades sticking out, it's horrible :(

The HV told me they wouldn't do anything unless I ask to see the consultant. I'm beginning to think I should but I dunno if they'll take me seriously :?

hi

if seeing the consultant will put your mind at rest id do it.

ive been worried about my lil girls wieght lately but they keep telling me its fine!

wish u well xx

You should ask to see a consultant if it could help you put your mind at rest

Chances are he's skinny because that's his make-up. Are you, OH or other members of your family very slim. Were they as babies? Are you happy that he eats?

Darling, he looks good on it. He's absolutely gorgeous :) I'm no doctor but I'd be tempted to say that if he was too underweight he'd be listless and lethargic.

Thank you both

Minxy, OH is really slim and I used to be

When Josh was a baby he had that chubbiness that most babies do, and with Ryan being quite heavy at birth I assumed he would be the same, but he's got nothing on him! He's never had a big appetite but he does eat and drinks *just* enough milk.

I think I'll go to the clinic and see the HV next week and have a chat with her :)

Definately ask to speak to a consultant if your worried, if only to put your mind at rest

I would say he's absolutely fine though, he looks so happy and healthy. And remember those charts are just a guide. Look at Jack, he is on almost the 90th centile. He's not unhealthily fat or anything he's just a big baby, same as Ryan isn't unhealthy he's just ikkle.

I know it's always a worry and cos Josh was chubby your probably worrying because they are different but I really think you don't have anything to worry about.

He's so gorgeous

when he was born you said he had hypotonia, could it be something to do with that? if he has low muscle tone it may affect his weight? i read a little about it when i was researching Ami's possible future problems.

Wanted to pass on these
Like has been said, he does look like a very happy and healthy little boy, and you will know if he's allright or not, but I do think you need to get peace of mind on this so I'd go see your GP about it  My best friends boys are very slim and always have been and were terrible eaters as young children too, but they are healthy and happy, some children are just slight that way, so please go get the medical opinion and try not to worry about his weight, if he's active and happy he's fine, very very best wishes

as you might have read over the past few days ive had a weight saga going on.. and the feeding specialist said.. if your child is bright alert happy and content.. and has lots of wet and dirty nappies then its healthy.. if hes lathargic.. upset.. seeking food all the time constantly wingey for no reason not many wet nappies or those which are very strong smelling all the time and hardly any poos then the chances are they arnt getting enough nutrition. so..

i think perhaps you should take a look at the baby and think.. which does he fall under.. happy and content or lathargic.. sleeping alot or wingy etc.. the wet and dirty nappies are a great indicator that enoughs going in..

remember every baby is different..and as he is weaned perhaps you like to try and think of ways to sneek extra calories into his foods? perhaps pasta.. breads, olive oil etc.. im sure we can all help you think of things to add into his food.. and sorta hide if he is fussy..

hope you dont feel stressed about the chart. because the centile thing is just.. a percentage of other children were averagely weighing this weight..and the same age as your baby. hope ou fee better soon xx and maybe this post might have helped.

Hi Hun

Try not to worry hun, he will be fine, in ur pics he looks very fit and healthy.

Alastair was 7lb 3oz born and was moving alone the 50th centile till her got ill at 8 weeks and dropped to the 2nd. He was seen by the doc a few months later who was not concered about him at all, cos he ate well. Over chirstmas Alastair droped below the 2nd centile so was referred back to see doc, who we seen 2 months ago at that time Alastair was 19lb 3oz, doc wasnt concered cos i told him how much Alastair eats etc, but has said he will see him in 4 months time, just to see how his weight is, I got Alastair weighed last week and he is 20lb still below the 2nd centile!! but im not worried, the doc says he maybe be just like his dad who is very very thin. I can see Alastair's ribs and everything. I know u must be worried but if you know he eats plenty then theres problery nothing wrong.....but if its make you feel better then go get him checked out

sorry hun just seen this....

i have just read ur above post and can i just say that its music to my ears as christopher is the same. he was very heavy at birth as u can see from my sig  he was very very chubby and very long too but now although he is tall he is very slim as is my OH. christopher had bad reflux as a young baby and although ryan doesnt, this set christopher back alot with his weight gain he has always been around the 25 centil at one point he was way below it for a llong time as he just would not eat or barley had milk as it caused him so much pain .
now at 16 mnths he stil can be fussy with food, still is not eating hardly any finger food as reflux causes him to gagg more then a non-reflux baby but as my consultant told me last appointment..as long as he is well, is not getting frequant illnesses (never gets any) and is a happy , lively child then he is thriving well.

last weight in for christopher finally topped him well over 25 centile..consultant advised me to feed high calorie foods to improve weight gain so we have been doing so the last few months and he has put alot of weight on recently and looksmuch better..he is also eating me out of house and home too so im not sure if the weight boost has increased hiis appetite

i have a good selection of high cal foods u can give him most of them are things like yougurts ...if i can help u with this them PM me hun.

also as my consultant said and he comes over from alder hay hospital and is very very good..he said to me that he monitors christopher for his reflux..(even tho his weight is more of a concern to me) and that he doesnt really see him for his weight as they dont do this unless they are "failure to thrive" - malnurished, lathargic and constantly ill because they are not getting enough nutrition in the diet. so i dont think a consultant would do much UNLESS the HV is so worried that she referes u both to a consultant . we had so much hasstle gettin in with out consultant as he is a peadiatric gastrologist ..but as i say he is not botherd about the weight as he is such a happy child .

i know how worried u must be..i have battled with this for 13 months and only now is he getting chunky again..but thats due to the boost of high calorie food...pm me fopr a list if u like . sorry this is long

Well I've just got his discharge letter from the hospital (they sent it through the post) and it says patient weight: 8kg :?

They said when we were there that it was 9kg

I'm gonna take a day off work next week and get this sorted.

Rhian, I'll PM you later :)

okies hun.....just thinking christopher was weighed on adult scales in hospital and they told me he was 10kg but our consultant said there was no way he was 10kg and weighed him on baby scales and he was just under 9kg..

ill chat to u in pm later hun can give u more help that way

Not yet, I went to the baby clinic to get him weighed but it was shut so I'm gonna go again on Monday :)

ok hun let us know how you get on.

im going to PM you hang on

Well I took Ryan to be weighed today and he's lost instead of gained. He's 17lb 10oz which means he's dropped below the 2nd centile.

The HV said he needs to be seen by a paediatrician and I said I've been saying that the whole time but none of the GP's have listened.

Now I'm really worried, I'm always on about how he's constantly poorly and I just wanna know if his weight is linked to that.

He's out of it today, he's just got over a heavy cold that he had for 2 weeks but he's done nothing but cry over the weekend and now he's really hot and sleepy. People say kids are like that, they're always ill, and I know that's true but this is taking the piss. He's almost one and I feel like I've never had the chance to enjoy him being a baby cos he's been poorly all the time.

I just wish I had a healthy little boy

  You must be so worried  At least he is finally going to see a specialist, I hope you get some answers soon.

Oh Kirsty ...
Poor you and poor Ryan.
Hopefully you will get a referral quickly and get this sorted out.
Make sure you keep chasing them until you get the appointment.
Lxx
