Hi guys,

Just needed some opinions or advice on which breast pump to get.

1. Medela Swing
2. Medela Pump In Style (would buy from USA I think as I can't find it in the UK)
3. Medela Freestyle
4. Other?

Do I need a double or will a single suffice?

I have the Madela swing and I cant fault it! Used it for seven weeks eight times a day and it is still going strong for me xx

It depends how often you are goin to pump. If you plan on expressing a lot I would invest in a double pump.

I have used the calypso and its very good and aboutthe same price as swing.

The medela swing is good but is for single pumping only.

I'm using te symphony at the moment which is a hospital grade pump and is very good ... I do prefer the swing though!

To be honest I would wait till after bubs is here to know what you need.

I agree with tweety and wouldn't invest in anything just yet, but I can't fault the medela swing. Would be handy to be able to double pump though (in sat expressing now and it always feels like its taking forever) xx

I have a swing for each boob

I'm saving for another one lol! Maybe Santa will be kind to me! Xx

Don't I need it in the hospital for them to show me how to use it properly? Just curious. Hubby wants to take turns and bottle feed baby too.

You can't use a pump for the first 60 hours anyway.

If you need to pump in the hospital the hospital will have a pump for you to use and they all work pretty much the same x

Thanks! Didn't know that I cant use a pump for a few days. Where can you rent the good ones then until you buy your own? At the end of the hospital stay? Does the hospital rent the symphony out to you?

Ask your Heath visitor or midwife about a pump..... I've got one on loan from the local hospital and its not costing me a penny!!

I've got an ameda double pump. It's fab. Small enough for travel too :)

xx

I have one on loan too ... But I also have a message on my answering machine asking for it back

I don't want to lose it ... It's amazing but I don't suppose they will let
Me keep it for a year!

I do think its only if you are exclusively expressing you will get it though

They charge £40 a month for hire at my local hospital so we purchased a medella pump in style second hand on eBay for the equivalent of two months rent and I can also resell it afterwards. I really really like it. Was given a medulla swing which is great for one side if you just want to express a small amount for night feeds etc. You can get split tubing for the swing to convert it to a double pump but it looses so much suction that it would take me forever to express like that!

How do you find the pump in style? I've been trying to find info from the UK and have only found US info/reviews.

Some say its stronger than the Freestyle on reviews, but I wanted to know any other opinions on the matter. Is it stronger than the swing? is it quicker to pump milk out with it out of one breast if you compared suction?

I have te swing and te symphony. I find the suction too strong on the symphony and have to use it at half power. So a swing does suffice.

It's more about double pumping really x

Do you use the swing on full power tweety? I'm scared in case it pulls my nipple off lol! (My nipple got stuck in the TT manual pump so this isn't as crazy as it sounds!) Xx

It's a different action to the swing, I get more milk out with it than I ever did with the swing, so it takes half the time as i can do both together and i got at least 40% more milk with the free style. Put it this way, through illness I didn't have enough milk at the start and it wasn't really improving, when I changed from swing to freestyle my milk supply shot up and I'm now getting 150% of what LO is aking each day, but thats just my experience. I'd say it is stronger, I had to have the swing up full strength on one boob and I only need get this about 30% to do the job.

If your either planning to, or end up, expressing full time rather than odd bottles it's SO important to get the pump which suits you best to get maximum milk.

Wait, just for clarification do you have the Freestyle or Pump In Style?

Thanks for the info!
