The community service is really working... last night we was out on the piss. My MIL rang to tell me as his parents (her brother) were just dispairing of him.
Don't know if he got in trouble and frankly don't care
What a prick he even said he was going out to get slaughtered, not just to go out and socialise he seriously needs to grow up!

My husband's cousin is a bit of a piss head to put it politely, although when sober he's a lovely lad and in 3 weeks is marrying the most lovely lass, so I don't know why he has to ruin it so
Anyway a few weeks ago him and his sister were out drinking and his sister got into a fight with some lasses. She picked on the wrong girls as apparently they started whacking her head against the floor etc, so her brother stepped in. Well, of course, it went mental then and ended in him smashing a local shop window. The police got called and he spent the night in a cell, as did his sister.
It went to court and she gotsomething like 20 hours community service and a £65 fine (i thik - i'm not sure on that one) and he got something like 100 odd hours community service and a £800 odd fine to pay for the window.
This is where is gets mental. His sister is doing her community service in a charity shop - ok, but how hard is that?? IMO she should be scrubbing public loos or picking up litter. But what's worse is that her brother was given a choice - to learn a trade of mechanics or plumbing WHAT THE!!! He's already a mechanic so took up plumbing... how is this a punishment?!?!? They pick him up from his door and he now spends time learning plumbing... I don't get how this is teaching hm a lesson... surely it's a reward?! How much would it cost me to do a plumbing course? Something I would love to do as it could save money in the future when we buy a house.
I am seething - he gets pissed and smashes windows up and gets taught a fricking trade for it. What is the point in being a good citizen nowadays
Oh and his £800 odd fine is being paid off £5 a week.... wow, that's harsh...
No wonder this country is going to the dogs.

Well, now my OH knows how to go about being a plumber!!! It's a profession that costs a bloody fortune to learn but it's so well paid.
That's not punishment! That's like praising him! I'm pissed off for you!

The idea of community service is as much integrating people into society and making them more useful members, as punishment. It's more of a deterrent to re-offend if you actually have received some useful skills helping you to do something valuable with your time, than it is if you're made do something obviously more punishing, but which will be forgotten after and doesn't have a follow-on effect.

Fair enough, but he already has a trade - he's a mechanic, his fiancee has a great job too, he just likes to spend his spare time drinking and getting into fights.
He's not going to become a plumber...
They should have royally screwed him over, them he would think twice before being a thug in future.I just feel for his fiancee, she is such a sweet girl. Apparently she was out with them when it hapened, and when she saw it going a bit downhill, she left - tried to take him home with her and he refused, preferring to act like a dick instead

Sorry, but regardless of him being family, this is not a punishment for him, it's pathetic.

I can see both sides of this. As widowwadman says, it is about integrating people into society, but on the other hand, annoying that he is receiving free education when he already has a trade!
On the other hand, he will probably see the punishment in giving up free time to do his community service...small consolation, but there you are.

DOn't get me wrong - if he was on benefits and jobless, then it wouldn't be so bad (although I would still be pissed he was getting free education, whereas law abiding people get sod all) but imo, he should be spending his free time litter picking, or helping out in a home for the elderly or disabled etc... surely there are better ways to integrate him into society then spending our taxes on teaching him a trade he doesn't need It just seems that who-ever took this decidion did not even look at his circumstances. What a waste of money!

I always thought if you got Community Service it meant you would be doing things that would obviously not make you re - offend!

If they're going to learn you a trade then where is the punishment in that!!!!

Even Boy George had to be a Bin Man or something.

It really is no wonder this country is going the way it is

Im with you on this one.. i think it completely takes the p!ss! Im all for community service and thats exactly what it should be.. working within the community not being given free training which could then provide him with a damn good job earning a lot of money!

This country is a joke at times!

Community service is about making reperation to the community, giving something back because of the harm and damage they have sone to their local society. It is also a restrictive punishment in that they have to give up their free time (usually 7 hoiurs a week). As he works full time he will have to give up a weekend for approx a year. Therefore he (and the girl) have been punished. However I agree in that vocational training is both unecessary and innapropriate at this time. He already has full time work therefore does not need any input into this. Offenders can gain qualifications through their punishment, like health and safety, woodwork etc but this is usually done as part of their punishment, whilst they are in the workshop making something, using machinery etc. Community Service is normally given to low risk offenders and as such he has had the right level of punishment but he should be doing something more for the public.

MM most offenders hated the working in the charity shops so its not as cushy as it may sound.

Good i hope it does her some good. She's 26 now, lives at home and is up to her eyeballs in debt as she has no sense of responsibility. It's so frustrating as they aren't horrible chavvy people. They've been brought up well, they should know better! I could batter them for the shame they've brought their parents. They've both been arrested a fair few times for getting pissed and fighting. Gah!

i agree your babies look ADORABLE in those piccies !!
and although i see the good side of getting them to do that, i think people who have really struggled to get into a training programme to become a plumber etc, only to share the class with some little thug who got their by general violence and destruction might say otherwise !!

Iv gotta say id rather hear he didnt have weekends because he was too busy planting pansies in the town centre and picking up dog poo for the next year !

Yep.. we have such a good justice system havent we? No wonder theres so much crime! I say get them doing proper community service in old peoples homes or such like or get them cleaning the streets!
