I do a bit of both too!
The midwives at the hospital told me to rub and try to rub in an upward motion to encourage the wind to come out. Apparently they're not allowed to pat anymore????!!!
in my book it said to start of rubbing lightly and if nothing comes up then to try rubbing a bit harder then if still nothing, to try patting. ive know with harriet rubbing doesnt so any thing, so just pat her and the wind comes up in about 10 secs.
I am not a mummy yet, so not sure if it is true, but I read that you can stimulate burping through massaging the baby's foot in a particular part. Is that right?
we do both. When Jenna was very young, we used to rock her back & forth & side to side as well (done with her sitting on one knee). We also apply a little bit of pressure to her tummy while patting / rubbing which seems to help.
I beat lil miss to within an inch of her life Just kidding... but she much prefers being patted to rubbed... it gets her wind up AND makes her drift off to sleep... don't ask, she's a weird one...
I do both but mainly rub - he loves it! I also jiggle him up and down on my knee if its a particularly stubborn bit of wind that doesnt want to escape!
