hi eveyone
have only just found out we're expecting our 1st and would like to get a book/s to help give us some insight to this whole pregnancy thing!! went into borders yesterday but they had 3 sections full!! gave up after 3 books!
can anyone help?

thanks lou xx

If you want something that covers all the things to expect etc then I'd say What To Expect When You're Expecting.

Handy and covers each month and changes to your body, baby growth and just about everything else. I didn't get it till well into 2nd tri but found it useful.

I agree, I have this book and every symptom etc it had I had it also has very helpful info and very informative.

I think its one of the best on the market to do with having a bubba!

I have personally been interested in the spiritual and psychological aspects of pregnancy and childbirth....so

Birthing from Within is a great book which helps prepare you for giving birth http://www.amazon.co.uk/Birthing-Within ... 930&sr=8-2

Also, Spiritual Midwifery by Ina may gaskin gives lots of examples of natural births and how women coped

Childbirth Without Fear by Grantly Dick Read is great for preparing for labour

and

Birth Reborn by Michael Odent gives some insights into Odent's methods of birthing http://www.amazon.co.uk/Birth-Reborn-Wh ... 003&sr=1-1

I would recommend Pregnancy Bible (as linked below) by Anne Deans, I have kept it even though I may not have another, just in case as I really can't praise it enough. I firstly bought the other linked one by Miriam Stoppard as I was trying to buy on a budget and it was about £8 cheaper in Borders (sad I know). I took it home, read it in one night and found it mostly told me common sense things, and had a lot of shiny pictures in but not a great deal of information. So I was a bit naughty and swapped it for the Pregnancy Bible and wow it was a lot better. Goes into a lot more detail which I like, had a section for the dads, and you could dip into it whereas the other one literally only lasted me a couple of hours and I felt nonethewiser.

For breastfeeding if you are interested I would highly recommend this book - http://www.amazon.co.uk/What-Expect-Whe ... 169&sr=1-1 . It goes into detail and I found it really helpful but I've heard it's a bit of a controversial one.

Also, I know it's cheeky but if you join the SMA club, whether you want to breastfeed or formula feed just join up anyway, I believe (if it's still going) you get a Newborn DVD. For a first time mum I personally found it fantastic and it shows you all the things that you'd feel stupid asking, and doesn't do it in a patronising way.

Good luck!! xx

Conception, Pregnancy and Birth by Miriam Stoppard

Ditto what leckershell said about the pregnancy bible book and also I would recommend Jo Frosts Confident Baby Care, great to help me make informed decisions about parenting and how to care for my LO.

I also read pregnancy & birth magazine and found it very interesting and I learnt a lot.

This book is brilliant - really easy to read and lots of helpful pictures. I find books that are too text heavy hard to read but this is fabulous :) I bought it second hand from an amazon seller too, so saved some money there :)

For some interesting reading, I just recently got this book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0091910552 Your baby week by week - really interesting and helpful for knowing what to expect and lots of useful info on feeding, changing baby and other things - great for someone like me who hasn't got a clue!

Hi
The midwife should give you one, that will give you symtoms and what to expect, i also bought one from mothercare which was abit more in depth, i use to get the free booklet you get from boots baby section, it has pregnancy info week by week i think it was, it also had check lists for things to take to hospital and what you need at home. Its free and worth having.

I had a combo of the pregnancy bible and the rough guide to pregnancy.
Both have good week by week stuff to read; the bible serious facts and the rough guide funny stuff that was always really accurate each week!

I agree too.

It's been a god send, especially through 1st tri and the beginning of 2nd tri  xx

Yep i used What to Expect when you are Expecting with my first - fantastic book!!

I've gone down a similar route to daffodil with this pregnancy so can recommend both Ina May Gaskin Books.. Spiritual Midwifery and Guide to Childbirth. Can't recommend Birthing from Within highly enough and also have gotten alot out of Hypnobirthing book too. We also got a copy of babys a first time users manual for my OH which is set out like an instruction manual geared at Dads to Be ;) - great advice and tips but light-hearted and humorous too :D I hear the Haynes baby manual is similarly instructive and entertaining... congratulations!! :D  xxx

I had a few and by far the best (for me) was The Pregnancy Bible by Dr Anne Deans, same as some of the other girls!...Yes its expensive, but sooooooooo worth it!
-It was the only book out of the ones I accumulated that referenced blood clotting disorders and problems such as Anticardiolipin Antibodies which I have.

To prepare for labour Ina May's guide to childbirth and Grantly Dick Read Childbirth without fear where FANTASTIC! I can't recommend them enough. To get through the pregnancy i found this forum a great source of reassurance, support and information. xx

Grantly Dick Read Childbirth without fear where FANTASTIC

Yes.

I kid you not...when I was first pregnant I was TERRIFIED of labour.

After reading childbirth without fear, I can honestly say I'm so much more confident that I can cope. I also found his suggestions of relaxation really helpful and I will be applying them in my labour.

I think approaching labour with the right mental attitude must help.

But I will let you know...LOL I will probably be a wreck lol
