What happens next if all results are normal?

Hi,

So far I've had the following tests;

Day 3 and 21 bloods

LH - 5.2
FSH - 9.2
OESTRADIOL - <70
PROLACTIN - 370

Transabdominal Ultrasound - Everything looked as it should apart from one cyst on my left ovary. Follow-up ultrasound booked.

OH SA - Excellent

I have an appointment in a couple of weeks time for another ultrasound. This is to check on the cyst on my left ovary (To see whether it has gotten bigger, smaller, disappeared etc) On the same day I also have my first appointment with a fertility specialist.

If all of our results have came back "normal", does anyone know what happens next? I'm just wondering what the next steps would be if no problems are found. Like many others, I anxiously awaited my blood test results and expected bad news. Then at the ultrasound I thought they were going to find something. At no point had I thought they might not find anything wrong with me or my OH.

I'd appreciate any info from those of you who have had normal results just so that I can get myself prepared for my appointment.

Thank you

Hi, all our tests have come back good so far and I’ve just got to do the HCS test (I think it’s called that) - if my tubes aren’t blocked then basically we’ve got to wait til we’ve been trying for 3 years until we can try ivf on the nhs. It may be different where you are and there obviously options to go privately but it is costly. I think if there is something wrong then they obviously treat that and/or can refer for you for help a lot sooner than 3 years, but if there’s nothing wrong, they just want us to keep trying. For me, it has actually reassured me as when he talked about it all, I realised how common it is to take a while to fall pregnant. I hope it happens naturally for you soon xx

I've got polycystic ovaries but they say (rightly or wrongly) that shouldn't affect anything and treat me as 'unexplained'. We proceeded to have IUIs then IVFs although I've had some further tests done privately.

Hi there, I know it’s been a while since I posted this thread but I just noticed I had replies! Is it the HSG Test you’re talking about, the one where they put some dye through? If so, I was told last week that I need one of those too! The consultant told me to ring the hospital when AF arrives so they can get me in for the HSG. I’m due AF in 3 days (2nd Feb)

That’s rubbish that you’ve been told you’ll have to wait until you’ve been trying for 3 years. This TTC thing is so long and stressful. The consultant told me that if my HSG results come back normal then we’ve to wait 6 months (she gave me another appointment for 6 months time). She said if we haven’t conceived within 6 months of the normal HSG result then we’d be referred for IVF. I really hope it doesn’t come to that of course.

That’s good you felt reassured at your appointment. I did too, as she was very knowledgeable and I didn’t feel like just a “number” if you know what I mean. She also told me that many women do conceive after having the HSG, so it can help. If you and I don’t conceive before the procedure, hopefully we’ll both see a BFP afterwards! Thank you and good luck to you too xx

Hi there,

Thanks for your reply and I apologise for the late response! Have you had an HSG Test done? I’ve explained a bit more in my reply above to the PP. If you don’t mind me asking, were your IUIs medicated? I don’t know much about IUIs but I think I read somewhere that they can be medicated. If my HSG comes back normal and we haven’t conceived within 6 months, the consultant said we’d then be referred for IVF. How did you find IVF and is it a painful procedure? Wishing you the best of luck xx

Wow it really is postcode lottery! Do they mean they’d start seeing you after 6 months to try ivf or some sort of treatment or is that just a consultation? Either way, I hope you get your bfp before that time x
I’ve looked at my notes and it’s actually called a HyCosy test which I think might be similar to a hsg test. I’ve also got to book appointment on first day of my period and then not have sex at all up until the test. And I haven’t been able to try for the last two months anyway cos I had to have two mmr jabs (otherwise they wouldn’t refer me as I wasn’t immune to rubella) so there’s no hope of getting a bfp before the test... unless of course they can’t book me in this month! I’m due on at the weekend-ish so hoping to get it out of the way soon and then get back to ttc!
I’ve also read that about getting bfps after these tests so fingers crossed it’s true and happens to us! Let us know how you get on with your test xx

It is! I’m in Scotland, maybe they do things a bit differently here but I’m not sure. Well the consultant told me to book an appointment in advance for 6 months time which I did. She said to me “ If you conceive before the appointment, give us a call and we’ll get you in for an ultrasound. If you still haven’t conceived, come to the appointment and we'll then refer you to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for IVF”. So from what she said, it sounded like it would actually be a referral.

I just done a quick search and it looks like the HyCoSy and HSG are the same things. I think they’re just abbreviations for hysterosalpingogram so it looks like we’ll be having the same test. We’re you given a letter to give to your GP prior to the procedure? The consultant gave me one which advises my GP to prescribe me aspirin and two types of antibiotics (I think). I’m also due AF at the weekend (2nd Feb). We could be having the test done around the same time! Do you have regular cycles?

How are you feeling about the HyCoSy? I watched an animated video on YouTube and it looked quite uncomfortable. I don’t know why I need to Google things so much lol, I’m just torturing myself! Yes I really hope we manage to conceive after the test. At least it’ll give us a bit more hope. I’ll let you know how it goes, and you do the same. Good luck xx

No I haven’t had a letter but on the notes about it that they gave me, it does say about antibiotics and I did wonder! Maybe I’ll ask about it when I call them to book the appointment.

Generally my cycles are regular. I had one cycle which was 34 days but I think there’s a chance that might have been a chemical. But other than that they range from 26-29 days so I’m due on anytime from today.

I started to google it but then started panicking so stopped lol, so I definitely am not going to watch a video of it  I think I’d rather go to the appointment thinking it will be a breeze! I’m hoping that because I never find smear tests painful at all, that this will be the same. I might be being naive but i think that’s better for me than worrying about it! good luck for yours and yes will definitely let you know how I get on x

Hi Sasha

This isn't what there medical profession would do next but I would strongly advocate a nutrition consultation if everything looks normal. Some friends were having terrible difficulty conceiving (2 failed ivf, 2 miscarriages) but then they took some nutrition advice and within 6 weeks of adopting the new regime they had a natural bfp that is progressing well. I've just had a consultation myself at the Zita West clinic and (while I knew my diet was lacking in protein and too sugary) they're was so much I hadn't realised and got some really high quality information about how I could prep my body for optimal results.

I know this is not convention but modern western medicine really doesn't consider a person holistically and is very behind on the importance of food, and this could save a lot of time/money/even potential heartbreak to get right now.

My ex OH adjusted his vitamins and drastically increased his sperm metrics so I have seen myself how small food things make a massive difference xx

Hi

Sorry for my late response too... I try not to come on here as much now!

They tried to give me clomid with my IUI. I had 50mg - the usual starting dose - but got 8 mature follicles(!) so that cycle was cancelled. They tried on 25mg and I still got 5 so it was cancelled again. We ended up doing it naturally from what I remember, but my ovulation was triggered so we got the timing right.

I haven't had an HSG but they've always said a HyCoSy is basically the same thing. I've also had a lap and dye to check for endometriosis.

I've had one fresh round and two frozen rounds. None were painful. I was sore and bloated a few days after the fresh egg collection. I reacted badly to the anaesthetic too so ended up with an overnight stay, being sick, fainting etc... but they said that had never happened before. I think it was because my blood pressure went very low- most ladies go home the same day!

The frozen ones and the transfer are just like a smear test and absolutely nothing to worry about.

I did say I wouldn't do another fresh cycle after my reaction but I've already been looking at another clinic for after these two frozen cycles...

Hey sasha_

I have been ttc no2 for 2 and a half years, I’ve too had bloods, internal scan, DH had SA and I’ve also had the hycosy and everything for us both showed up fine. We have been labelled with unexplained infertility.

Doctors have said that next steps is IUI or IVF but I have to find it myself so we are now under private care.

I am booked in for IUI next months cycle. I’ve got to take clomid from day 2-6. Xx

Fingers crossed for u xx

Hi Sasha, have you had your test yet? I’ve had my HyCosy now and pleased to say all was completely clear :) it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be and it is spot on when they say it’s like bad period pains, although I have to say the pains felt worse on the journey home than they did when I was having the test! Only lasted about 30 mins afterwards though.
Also, they could see I was about to ovulate soon which is good news as I was worried I’d missed my chance this month. We were told that if i don’t get pregnant in the next 6 months that we’d need to book another appointment with the fertility clinic, but we won’t get ivf with the nhs until we’ve been trying for 3 years. So I’m guessing the appointment is to keep us in the system but I’m not sure.
Also, we were told that the HyCosy makes you more fertile for a while cos it flushes out the tubes! I had read that but I didn’t know if I should believe it, but the specialist told us it was true so yay! only trouble is, my hopes will be up more now! Just really relieved it’s done now :)
Oh and I had 3 antibiotics to take straightaway after the test and just took paracetamol an hour beforehand xx

I had my hsg start of Jan and they told me I was about to ovulate then too. Also told me 3 months post hsg your more fertile. I tried the cycle after hsg...BFN. ..and af due tmrw on 2nd cycle after hsg..and af is due on her way -no luck for me with the hsg so far. Hope you have better results from it. We are joining ivf waiting list in May and will have ivf around Nov/Dec time

Thank you and I hope you get your bfp before that time. I’m just feeling really happy to be able to start trying again. It’s been a long two months!

I'm glad you can start trying again Peony. I also didn't find the hsg to be much of an issue. The gynaecologist that arranged it for me said she'd seen a lot of ladies fall pregnant soon after it. The fertility doctor (who had nothing positive to say about anything!!) said it was a myth!! Unfortunately it didn't bring any luck for us but plenty do get their BFPs afterwards so I reckon there has to be something in it. Good luck!!

Have you considered doing karyotyping, in case genetics is the issue.
