As title says really. Just wondered. I know recommended is 6 months, but a lot of people start a bit before?

We're starting today!! She's 6 months next week but really wants food now. I can't hold her off any longer. I don't see a problem starting a bit earlier if they're ready x

I'm hoping to wait 6 months but I don't think a week before makes much difference

I agree about starting earlier if ready. Good luck traci. 6 months already! Scary how quickly it goes! Can't wait to hear how you get on. X

We started a week early from 6 months but only cos he was more than ready, if he hadn't been we'd have waited, but he was 9 days overdue soi figured he was 6 mths if taken from his due date lol!!!

I have a feeling we might start early, Vince is obese!

Lol Ish! I keep thinking of starting early too, although will play it by ear. I can't wait to see his wee face when he has food. I suppose he'll be 6 months before I know it *sniff*

Cam will be 20 weeks on Saturday  and we have done a few spoons of purée. I'll start with blw stuff at 6 months. His bottles just aren't sustaining him at all and he's on 5 7oz bottles per day. He has no problem with the purée and has started opening his mouth properly for the spoon today :)

20 weeks! Thanks chicky. Brody's taking 7oz most feeds now too. Scary mary. I give him that parsons powder occasionally with a spoon as I end up pouring it on his face otherwise and missing his mouth! x

Leandros the same with the spoon. He's 19 weeks today and from when he turned 4 months weve been giving him baby rice and letting him chew on rusk. I think I've made the right decision as he was making all the right signs and No is more comfortable eating. I'm only gonna stick to baby rice and 4 month foods till he's 6 months Then start making my own food and try a bit of blw. I'll keep to the 1 spoon unless he tells Me otherwise. We did try him on a tropical fruit jar which he didn't like but i hing it was too sour and don't want to give him too sweet things as it goes straight through him right now but he's normal down below on the baby rice. tmi Sorry xxx

I still demand feed lo (bf habits die hard!) and he has between 5 & 6 7oz bottles a day and that's nearly 4 weeks into the weaning!!! He's definitely eating tons of the food as his poos are full of it, but at the moment to him food is just fun and play and bottles are his food so he's not reduced his bottle intake at all yet. I guess hewill when he's ready!

Owen was about 5 months /5 and a half x

Mum of Owen. Born 11/7/11 @ 19.17pm weighing 7lb 12 oz :)

They need to be sitting, grabbing things and getting it to their mouths etc, otherwise there can be a risk of choking. They recommend 6 months as well because you basically give them what you have and have stopped sterilizing bowls and spoons. Have you read the book? It's very informative and will help you decide when your baby is ready. She says most babies are between 5.5 months and 7.5 months. I emailed Gill who wrote the book as Kynon was a month prem so I was a bit unsure when to start. She said to watch his cues like the other babies and surprisingly he seemed ready at 6 months so that's when I started and he's been doing well and seems to enjoy his food.

It's great fun, but you can't rush it unlike spoon feeding, they won't feed themselves if they are not ready to do so!

Thanks Sarah. Am going to order the book.x
