OMG!! Has nothing changed in midwifery in the last 10 years!!! It feels like it hasn't from what the midwife was saying!!!

It's left me quite infuriated actually. Particularly when she was talking about things like episiotomies and delivery of the placenta, she wasn't giving people enough information to make an informed decision. She was just saying 'if your midwife says you need an episiotomy then you'll have to have one and they give you an injection to help deliver the placenta because otherwise it takes ages to come out' WTF!?!?

It's made me want to think more seriously about my birth plan and to make sure the hospital staff actually bother to read it!!

It appears different hospitals say different things too. Ours seems to promote a more natural approach, which I like. We've been told there are some situations that require the injection to speed up the placenta, but we are able to choose to have it naturally.

More importantly, we were told that a MW would rather cut than have a mum have a third or fourth degree tear - me too from the way she explained it.

I think our classes or MW team are pretty fab. They explained the reasons behind procedures and why they might or might not suit individuals.

You've got a point about labour plans, I still need to do mine. Why am I being so lazy?

Sorry you had a bad class  That is a bit pants... I think its a gr8 idea with regards to the birthing plan if their like that, you dont want them telling u something u dont want...

Mine were very pro natural aswell, they also seemed quite honest with their appoach, i walked out feeling a bit more informed...

I found the delivery mw was really good with my birth plan. They obviously read it and remembered the points - they actually reminded me of things I wanted (such as immediate skin to skin) as I forgot some things in the heat of the moment. I would definatly recommned doing one. Could you have a visit to the labour ward in advance? Our hospital rusn these tours and I thought they were very informative and you will get more of an idea about the ethos actually in the ward.

Aww sorry your class wasn't as good as you'd hoped. I think it really does depend on the area. TBH I cannot fault my midwife team/antenatal classes or other antenatal care - they have been brilliant. In fact their advice has been as helpful as things I've learned from on here :D
