Hi

I have a little concern with regards my girlfriend's pregancy. We've worked out that she is 3 weeks pregant, although we didn't know until today! Our concern is that she got a little drunk on the fifth day (amended - worked out it was third day) of her pregnancy (although we didn't know she was pregant that day). Will this have any effect on the unborn baby? She has no intentions of drinking again throughout, but I'm still a little worried.

Thanks for any help!

Firstly i would like to say welcome to the forum it is a very friendly place with lots of advice at hand!

Im not a doc or anything but im pretty sure eveything will be ok as long as she is feeling ok! If you are too worried tho you could always get in touch with you local GP surgery and ask to see a midwife who could check her over!

Sorry hope this helps!

Hi jayk. Don't worry, it'll be fine, I'm sure. With my first I went to 2 parties within the 1st 2 weeks of being pregnant and got rather drunk at both! The baby was fine. (I also got drunk in the 1st couple of weeks of this pregnancy before I knew I was pregnant!!) My friend did something similar, and asked her doctor about it. He said that at that age, it normally has absolutely no effect. On the rare occasions it does have an effect, it will kill off the foetus completely, rather than cause any birth defects. If your girlfriend is still getting signs of pregnancy then you have absolutely nothing to worry about (although I know she may not see any symptoms for a few weeks yet - if not, try not to worry, the chances are it's fine - but you could always do another pregnancy test if you are worried?)

Thanks - you've been lots of help! I rang the NHS direct helpline who were no help whatsoever but other people have said it will be ok. I'm still trying to get my head round the fact that I'll be a dad but I'm warming to it :D

Like this forum - I'll probably be back as I'm a newby to all this baby stuff and I don't know where to start!

i found out im pregnant on monday and b4 that i was drinking every day then stopped st8 away when i found out! I am too worried if i have done any damage but readin this has reasurred me a bit :)

good luck with u and ya gfs pregnancy :)

Hi Jayk

I would say definately dont worry. I found out I was pregnant last June and I had been to two barbeques and got absolutly rat-a*****ed at both of them and was pregnant but didnt know. I was very concerned but having spoke to the doctor he said that you would be surprised about how many women had been drinking whilst not realising they were pregnant.

He said as long as you dont carry on drinking you will be fine. So I just didnt drink at all whilst pregnant and I have a perfect little girl!

Hi jayk I would try not to worry, I conceived when on holiday in the summer and was drinking really really heavily!!!! I haven't touched a drop since finding out that I am preg so hoping that it will be ok for me too!!!

Xxx

I realised I was pregnant at the end of Christmas party season and I was drunk more than once around that time but as long as you stop when you realise you are then you should be fine.

Welcome to the gang :)

Hmm, I think that kinda sums up NHS direct generally really.

Honestly though, I wouldn't worry about it. The fact that you are aware that it is a problem to drink whilst pregnant is a true sign that your baby will be well looked after. Its the people who drink fairly heavily all the way through which are worrying.

If you are worired though, I would make an appointment with your midwife or doctor, just so they can reassure you.

I got my BFP on New Years Day. I had been testing daily for about 3 days as AF was due on the 30th December, and they were always BFN so I thought I was safe. I woke up on New Years Day with a hangover and got my positive! I cried bucketloads of guilt tears all day. I had my 20 week scan last week, and my little boy is doing fine.

Also, with my daughter, I didn't find out I was pregnant until I was 14 weeks, and I was drinking, smoking and taking other illegal substances  . I stopped them all as soon as I found out I was pregnant, and she is now a 13 year old girl driving me nuts!!!!
