Weaning at 3 1/2 months

On the health visitors advice we have started weaning Jessie already, we were advised to as she is very long and very hungry and was starting to need to be fed constantly. Following what the hv said she has been having half a rusk with 10ml of milk once a day for a week and we are now putting this up to twice a day. I would like to start introducing her to other foods before too long but am not really sure when to as she seems so young to be trying things. I have to say I was really worried before starting her on the rusk but she loves it, it has settled down her feeding a bit and she takes it really well off the spoon and it hasn't had any side effects, she's still having regular poos!
So my questions are:
When can I start introducing other foods?
What other foods should I introduce?

Maybe baby rice - mixed with her milk and then you could add other foods to it like banana, carrot, sweet potato, apple, pear... something like that? We've tried Fi with carrot, sweet potato and banana and she was NOT impressed but she LOVES her baby rice! It's fine to stick with just rice/rusk for a good few weeks before you need to start on flavours :) they also do packet porridges with different flavours - i think we're going to try them next.

BTW this isn't official advice, lol. Just what we're doing!
 
hi hun, aiden was also weaned early, we started with baby rice mixed with milk for about 2 weeks, then moved onto baby porridge, then slowly added fruit/veg to the rice/porridge.. :) hope that helps!
 
It seems young to wean your baby, I agree, but rewind the clock by about 10 years or so and the advice/norm was to wean babies at 16 weeks (according to my sister!).

As you are already weaning, stick to baby rice and smooth, easy to digest purees mixed with your LO's usual milk. Don't give anything containing gluten until after your LO is 6 months.
 
At that age Corey was eating, baby rice, puree fruits, puree fruits mixed with the baby rice. Crushed rusk mixed with milk, crushed rusk mixed with puree fruits. Baby poridge, cerial etc.

You have many many months to wean, theres no need to rush into stuffing LO with anything and everything... I stuck to the above until he as about 5.5months. Now he pretty much has what we have, and savory jars if were out and about etc.

I started weaning at 14weeks on the advice of a pead. I dont know if I would have listend to a HV. But then my opinions never very high of them, as mine have been rubbish!

Food before 1 is just for fun!! :)

Also, dont cut out ANY of the milk feeds... as this is still LO's main source of nutriance.
 
:wave: As Corey's Mummy said I weaned Evie at 4 months on the advise of my GP, HV and paedeatrician. Try and get a second opinion- the later you wean the better.

All babies go through a growth spurt at 3.5-4 months. I remember Evie was taking 6 8oz bottles a dy and it was knackering but we got through that and managed a whole other month before weaning.

Also rusks are quite sweet so try not to give them every day- Evie has rusk as a 'treat' twice a week now. Try maybe a spoon or two of baby rice with the last bottle of the day and then maybe a couple of spoons for lunch or breakfast too.

After a few weeks of baby rice we moved onto basic veg and fruit purees. We started weaning 2 months ago and now Evie has pretty much anthing except for meat and fish (until next week :cheer: )

Definately seek a second opinion on weaning so early though- sometimes HV's can be a law unto themselves..... :wink:
 
Tia's red health book says weaning between 3/4 months.... :lol: But she is 9 :lol: and they didn't know then what they know now.

Be ever so careful with banana... it makes lil miss terribly constipated... did the same with Tia.
 
I agree with Jade about the rusks, just watch out. Some are so loaded with sugar it's scary!
