Hi all
I'm going down the washable nappy route and have decided on the nappies I'm getting after meeting with a nappy rep but they are more suitable for babies from 8lb.. now unless I have a mahoosive baby I'm hoping that these might be a bit big for the baby to start with. ( ) I was going to use disposables for the first couple of weeks but now I'm thinking that it seems like a shame not to start as I mean to go on. The rep recommended Kissaluvs size 0's but I was wondering if anyone else had any recommendations for newborn nappies? (The kissaluvs apparently fit just below the cord stump so I'm looking for something that does this too)

I skipped on getting washables from birth simply as had no idea of baby size and also its a hell of a lot of work in the first few weeks to want to cope with all the extra washing/drying that comes with them. I am so glad I did this as I had a really shitty first few weeks and if I had had to wash nappies on top I'd have been more of a wreck than I was. Galen was pooing 6 times a day  We were getting through over 10 nappies a day.

Consider getting some biodegradeable ones over the likes of Pampers etc and then when your LO reaches a bigger weight and you can also see the body shape get some trial packs and see what works from the washables. Buying a make before birth is a bit risky as different babies suit different nappies. It can be trial and error to find a make that works for your baby. Trial packs are great and can help you decide. Its a big expense to fork out £50 plus for a batch only to find your LO leaks out of them all the time or they are not comfy in them.

I didn't bother with them at birth either. I didn't know what I would like and didn't know how big she would be. I'm lucky enough to have a real nappy shop just 6 miles from me so I bought a few different ones to try. We used nature baby eco-disposables (www.naty.com) and also tried Bambos until about 5-6 weeks.

Kissaluvs do fold down below the cord stump but I didn't get on with them. They are not very absorbent at all and my LO finds them extremely uncomfortable when they're even slightly wet. And I'm not kidding - I've washed the two I have about 30 times in the hope that'll make them more absorbent - it doesn't! Out of all the cloth nappies I've tried they're my least favourite - they just feel wetter than all the rest for some reason! They are nice and soft, though, but with a newborn I'd be expecting to change these about 8 times a day (if not more) which is the last thing you need with a new baby.

I go with cotton prefolds now but these would be a faff with a newborn. I also use TotsBots regularly - Bamboozles, Fluffles and Flexitots. Flexitots come up quite small so might be good for younger baby. However they are expensive - nearly a tenner a nappy. Fluffles are lovely, soft and dry easily but they are BIG!

hi hun.. well done for thinking about it.. you are half way there.. i used them as soon as teds meconium finished.. he didnt fit into size 1 untill he was 3 weeks.. i only had 2 newborn nappies (shapped) and prefolds we did half and half cloth/spozies then i havent bought a pack of disposables since 3 weeks old. Then i started making my own.

we have just supplied a company who rent nappies to a local hospital (premature ward) our newborn nappies go from 6-10 lb aprox.. so your baby should get a few weeks wear from them.

cloth is fantastic and truly addictive.. you save yourself a fortune and its healther for your baby because the chemicals that disposables have in them arnt being passed through the skin..

We are going to be using bamboo terries but probably not straight from birth all the time. I have bought the smallest Naturecare Baby disposables for the first couple of weeks and the real nappy rep advised us to use flushable liners with them to help keep the nappies from being a health hazard whilst in landfill.

I'm hoping to phase in the bamboo terries as soon as the meconium is out of his system as I hear it stains quite badly. I don't want to make too much more work for myself hence the phasing in period of a couple of weeks. Hopefully by then I'll be a whizz at folding nappies and putting them on correctly :D

Btw I read that muslins are often used, folded on newborns as they aren't so bulky. I guess it depends whether you want to go down the folding route though. Otherwise there are a few other shaped makes here.

You'll probably find that the vast majority of newborn poo will go straight through the liner so personally I wouldn't bother with this.

Really? Oh damn, stupid real nappy rep  I'll give it a go and if it looks to be pointless, I'll give up. Thanks for the warning :D

We used bimbles right from the beginning and they are fab! They are fleece lined so you don't need separate liners, the meconium and poo wash out no problem. They lasted until she was about 2 months. She's 3 months tomorrow and already wearing 6-9 month clothes so if your child is smaller (she's on 98th percentile for height :D ) they would last longer. We did the maths and decided that as long as we got one months use out of them they would be cheaper than disposables. They are stored away for next baby now as we will definately have got our money's worth! We used the extra small motherease wraps which do the same weight range as the small (up to 12lb) but are cut to be more fitted rather than baggy. They are reduced on the bargain page at babykind. 3 wraps did us. We had 15 bimbles and in an emergency we would use the fluffles that we had bought for later. They dry really quickly - we don't have a tumble drier - as the inside booster, although being attached, pulls out for drying. Because they are fastened with a nappi nippa, which is really easy to use, you get an exact fit and so we have never had nappies that leak. We have had a couple of leaks but only if we've left a bit of nappy sticking out of the wrap so that's our fault, not the nappies or wraps.

We used bamboo nappies on Finn from the word go. Ours were from Lollipop nappies as the rep came and did the talk at our antenatal classes.
