I'm looking to do volunteering for an afternoon/evening a week and have been on do-it.org.uk looking for volunteer jobs.

Just out of interest... who here has done any sort of volunteering and what did you do? Just to be nosy :D

I'm looking at doing something like Samaritans/Victim Support. x

different end of the line but I volunteer in a rspca shop and I love it all the money bar rent goes to our local RSPCA centre, it gets me out for 9 hrs a week mixing with other people and its also somethigng for me to put on my CV

I found out about it by just contacting charitys that interested me then sent on a CV it took a while before something came up but it was worth the wait

Just contact people that do things you may be interested in saying what you are looking to do you never know what may come back

Mentor for who Minxy???

I did voluntary work at our local hospice but it was bloody depressing.

I also did voluntary work with our local cub group which was fantastic. Great fun.

Hiya hun,

Good for you! Ive done a few voluntary jobs. I did St johns ambulance for about a year. Didnt really have much to do apart from go to football matches on a saturday and went to windsor horse show. Didnt really get any casualties.. so good to know first aid though!

I then did the samaritans for around a year.. this was nothing like i expected. I loved the training and i really do admire the people that can keep doing it. I had to do one evening a week and also one overnight duty a month. The overnight duty was awful and extremely busy with sex calls and hoax calls. I dont think people realise how unbelievably abused the line is. I would probably say in a year i had a handful of what i would consider genuine calls. I really dont want to put you off as i think they are crying out for people. I just got too fed up with the rubbish i was listening to and decided enough was enough when someone hoaxed their own suicide.. oh and when i was threatened to be taken to court cos i wouldnt listen to a serial caller w@nk!

So from there i went on to be a support contact for NACC (National Association for Colitis and Crohns) I am currently on leave but will definately go back to this when i can. Ive never had one dodgy call and the training is brilliant. I find it so rewarding as i can probably empathise with the callers who ring and need support.

Ive looked at several different voluntary jobs over the years and would highly recommend it.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me,

Claire x

Sorry, all my posts are so brief cause I had on eye on Stanley (bad mummy  ).

I've applied for Face mentoring, who have the contract for New Deal clients in Birmingham. Can't find any info on them, but this is similar.

http://www.volunteeredinburgh.org.uk/vo ... mentor.htm

It involves meeting up with a young unemployed person for a coffee every month and helping them with any issues they may have; housing, health, accessing training. Anyone can do it, they like people from all walks of life with different skills/experience. :)

I volunteer at an infant school. It's part of my course but I do about 4 times the amount of hours I need to because I enjoy it so much. It's a big help for the school as many of the classes have only one adult to 30 kids most of the time :o

Me and DH used to volly for samaritans and as nori says lots of sex calls   , the bloke who set it up actually thinks you should sit and listen to that crap but thank god our branch didnt and we were able to terminate calls like that if they clearly were not suicidal.

There were lots of regular callers who called and you got to know some genuine others who thought it was cheaper than a chat line.

It was very sad when you actually got a caller who were seriously attempting suicide on the line though  luckily its very very rare that happens

we used to do xmas and new year alot which is suprisingly quiet.

we also used to volly at a swimming club for disabled people once a week, just being in the water and encouraging people to swim/help if needed

What about CAB they have a really good training packages for Vols and you get alot of transferable knowledge that would be great for your CV if you were looking for paid employment or a change of career in a few months
