Another question...My daughters umbillical cord fell off last night and since then her belly button has been weeping with pus and looks a bit red. Is this normal? We have bathed it with cotton wool and water and fold her nappy down to allow it to breathe..it doesn't seem to bother her either?

Happened with lil miss.. is smelt bad too :puke: We used alcohol on it though (advised by GP's here) and that cleared it up really quick... my mum also said that once the babies cords fell off in her day, they gave the babies a bath with a little bit of salt in it to help it dry up.. .I did that too.. :) didn't harm lil miss and her cord healed nicely within a few days. Just remember to clean it at every nappy change... pull it back too to open it a little to clean it.

Sadly she was born with an umbilical hernia so its all a bit misshapen atm. :(

We had a nasty cord bit too and was just told too keep it immaculately clean.

my LO smelt so bad!!! we used salt water and worked a treat. I phoned NHS direct when it was smelling lots and i was told if its red round the outside it could be an infection.

mine little ones was like this for a few days too and mw sed it normal as it just the inside of the cord healing to make the belly button and as long as it doesnt smell there is nothing to worry about but keep keeping it clean until it stops.

xxxxx

Thank you for the replies, it's not smelling or red around the edge so we will put some salt in her bath later. It looks alot better today actually..I'm just being a worrying new Mum I think!!

Jonah had this and he now has IMO the cutest bb ever!! It goes in, then out, like a proper button!! How cool to have an inny and an outy!!

OoOh and Squiglet, a midwife told me afterwards that if you tape a 2p over it for a few days it will go. Don't know if you fancy giving it go? You never know, it might work!!

We phoned the labour ward when Finn's cord was smelly & gross and they said it's normal. Because we've got winter babies we wrap them up warmly rather than letting it get the fresh air and basically it goes gangrenous which is what makes it drop off. Nice eh! But normal. Keep it clean but I'd call MW or HV or Doc if you're worried.
