a breastfeeding counseller/peer supporter?

Cause I was reading about it the other day and thought, hey, I'd enjoy that, plus I could put it on my record of achievement/UCAS form (yes, instead of hockey successes and music grades, I'll have "having baby" which kind of doesn't look good)

Does anyone know how one goes about it? Apparently SureStart do some sort of course...plus am i too young? I mean, on the grounds that some woman twice my age who is just after giving birth and has severe nipple agony will probably not want me popping up :rotfl:

Just a thought  if I could do it I may, I should really do something productive with my summer after all

i didn't breastfeed for long but i think you should go ahead with it , i think there should be more help.

btw, i thought you were going to say something else

I am not sure if you are too young for the course. Probably worth dropping them an email to check

BUT I think it is a fantastic idea. You should be soooooooooooooooo proud of yourself that you have BF, and for so long.
And its wonderful that you want to help others do the same.. especially if you were able to help lots of young girls ........ who would be better to help them learn about bf than someone who has done it themselves... instead of listen to old fuddy duddies like me :rotfl:

you also have such a bright/sensible head on young shoulder I think that you would be a real assett to them ... good luck :) :)

Ooh i was thinking about doing something like this the other day. I think i will go on the hunt for info, see what i can find :)

Go for it hun, your age is irrelavant(sp?), you have the experience and the maturity to be very good at it so be brave and give it a bash!!

definately - you are a great role model. So many young mums don't have the support or the confidence. Also I think breastfeeding does have a lentil knitting weirdo image thanks to the mediaonly focusing on the extreme EN's and it would be great to have a young normal mum to talk to. Ask your HV, mine put me forward for the training course.

Would be a brilliant thing to do. Not many young mums BF. I really didn't want to but i never knew the benefits of it. My OH explained all to me and decided to give it a go. Loads of young girls give me the weirdo look while i'm feeding in town. Fortunately my OH has helped boost my confidence, or i'd have given up by now!
Go for it! More mums need to be doing it!

Well the lifestart lady came round today and she knows another lady who is a counseller so is going to get her to give me a ring!

Here's hoping :cheer:

I think it is a fab thing to do and in the future, after BF'ing for longer, I would perhaps like to do similar :)

I'm just finishing training to be a bf peer mentor and it's with Sure Start and the HV in the area. My Community Nursery nurse (who I deal with more than my HV) asked if I wanted to train to do it and it's SO interesting. Makes you even more passionate about it :D

We've thought about things such as why people don't bf or give up etc. yet even though you know the reasons, the more you learn about it and just how beneficial it is, you can't really understand why people don't do it.

yeah definately! i think ur age would be a positive thing, it would be fabulous to have a mentor with a younger perspective, coz the impression i get is far fewer teen mothers do it- i think we BFers are stereotyped as eccentric old hippies and many teens are a bit prudish/squeamish or whatever and someone like u i think would be really encouraging and inspirational to them. go for it! let us kno how u get on!

I agree, I think you'd be fab. And having met you, I know you have a lovely manner with people - go for it!
