Traditional names are 'dying out'

Kinda alone similar lines lol but totally opposite I just read that the name Thomas has been in the top 5 boys names for 200 years!! Thats crazy isnt it!? I suppose its like all names! Some come and go while others stick around forever! :)

I thought they were becoming more popular again.

George, Harry,Archie Grace, Olivia, Ruby etc were never heard of when i was at school, even when Cameron was born they were considered "old fashioned names".

I think trends have just changed, and will probably change again

but leland is a tradition name , early anglo saxon ! but its not classed as traditional is classed as modern

All possible names we've picked for Horatio so far are traditional. I don't like the modern weirdly spelled stuff and I also want to give my family the chanceto be able to pronounce it (I'm German, so anything with a "th" is out).

Ooh me too!

I think even the ones that are considered awful will be re-visited in time as more people look for something different to Jack and Thomas etc. :)

Its a shame Anne isn't out of favour... or at least it should have been 29 years ago..its a horrible horrible name. :shakehead:

And me, hence my Constance!! We've decided on Stanley if we have a boy too Minxy :cheer:

Obviously we like our traditional names! Boring to some, but they both have meanings to us.
Charlotte is my Grandmothers name, and Thomas is Simons Grandfathers name, his middle name is Mark, which was my Grandads name...................It could have been worse My other grandmother was Ethel and G.D was Horace :talkhand:

Hahaha and Connie was on my shortlist! Great minds :D

i have found a new love for Archie recently :D but normally i like names like braydon and breanna etc :D

depends what you classify as old fashioned. like gem said, names can be old, just not very used. like willow, also an anglo saxon word, apparently it is one of the few remaining true angle saxon words in common day usage, i think another one os badger....

if i'd have hada boy he'd have a traditional name, but not necessarily a popular one lol. I decided early on that he'd have to have a "good strong name"

Then i went and picked a practically made up name for my baby girl lol

It's interesting that they've decided that traditional names were the ones in use in 1907. To me, traditional names are Biblical one as they've been around so long! David, Peter, Paul, Simon, Ruth, Esther....

I much prefer traditional names, even better if they have some history to them
