Tounge Tie

Hello,

I've just found out that my reason for struggling with BF is that my 2 day old baby girl has tounge tie.
She really struggled to latch and had to be cup fed a small amount of formula. Combined with this I have managed to express (using a pump) virtually no colstrum.
I was sent home today with advice to bottle feed Aptimil until the tie can be cut next week.
Has anyone experienced similar to this?
I feel awful giving her it but she's had hardly any food since being born.

Hi Hun, my 13 day old DD has a tongue tie but we are managing to muddle through with bfing. Initially her latch was pretty excruciating (there were tears!) but my nipples seem to have toughened up and I've encouraged her to have a nice wide mouth.

We're not having to express at the mo as she is gaining weight ok, but I just wanted to send you some love and support. You'll probably find your milk will come in over the next day or so, keep expressing to keep your supply up and hopefully things will settle down for you once it's snipped.xx

I'm continuing to use my pump to try and express. Unfortunately she gets literally nothing when BF so it wasn't an option to keep trying until the middle of the week.
I'm hoping to be able to easily switch her back to BF after formula, I just know that this isn't going to be easy and just hope my milk still appears.

Ah Hun you're doing all the right things, fingers crossed your milk comes in in the next day or so. Do lots of skin to skin too, might just encourage your body a wee bit.
Hopefully someone with more experience will be able to give you more advice.xx

My little one had a severe tongue tie that affected her latch. She had it cut on her 4th day. I would recommend continuing to put her to your breast at every feed or pumping if she really can't latch and as pin badge says, lots of skin to skin. I wouldn't worry about how much you can express at this stage as a) you don't make much milk in the early days and b) pumping doesn't give a true reflection of how much you are producing. I hope the snip resolves things for you.
