Hi all my 3 yr old has bad tooth decay it started as soon as she got her first tooth...
She has never had many sweets and only thing she does have is chocolate...never lollies or jellies etc.. were waiting for an appointment for her to have effected teeth taken out..

But the dentist makes me feel really bad as i know i havet given her anything differant to wat other parents give theres.. she has always had diluted juice with no added sugar i know its citric acid which can make it worse but i try reduce this by giving her juice through a straw..

i just wondered if anyone has been through this or if anyone knows a possible reason why she has this?

Normal food can cause decay, not just junk food. I presume she has lots of fruit and that is full of sugars and stuff that is nasty to teeth. And you have said she has juice and chocolate so they will obviously be a factor.

Perhaps it would be worth asking your dentist for help and advice. Perhaps the dentist could watch you brush her teeth to see if there is anything that could be done differently. Assuming you are brushing her teeth for 2 minutes twice a day, maybe she needs 3 times.

Different people have different teeth so genetics may have somehing to do with it. Some people have more robust teeth that can take neglect without too much in the way of negative effects. Some people take great care of their teeth but still end up with cavities.

Getting teeth removed at age 3 sounds quite sever so please do make sure you are given help and advice from the dentist on how to stop this from continuing.

Good luck to your little girl, I hope she isn't too upset by it all :(

edit double posted no delete button thats odd :?

are u cleaning her teeth every day and using a 1000ppm toothpaste?

is she getting enough calcium and vitamin C?

if so, and u say she's not on loads of sugar, then i would take her to the GP. some conditions such as dry mouth can lead to tooth decay in people who look after their teeth properly and shouldnt have it. (saliva is vital for healthy teeth)

poor lil thing, must be painful, hugs for her

we brush her teeth 2 times a day with oral b childrens tooth paste.
she has robinsons diluted juice after dinner through a straw and same after tea
for breakfast she has either toast or cereal with cup of milk
then dinner on average is sandwhich normally like hame and cucumber something like that.
and tea is usually cooked meal e.g spegetti bolonaise, sweet sour chicken, home made pizza, and sunday dinners, she raley eats stuff like fish fingers as she doesnt like batter or breadcrums lol..
for supper she will have either cereal or toast.
For pudding after dinner its normally chocolate or yoghurt
pudding after tea is usually fruit
we brush her teeth after breakfast and after supper
I really dont know whats causing it as she has had it from her first tooth her diet i think is no different to any other 3 yr old. i did have complications in pregnancy (cholostasis) and she was brought abit early at 37weeks. her cousin has same problem too so maybe its in her genes,

The dentist looked at her diet as i wrote it down for 3 weeks and she said only thing was juice and advised i gave her it through a straw which i do.. but she wont drink water only milk and juice.
it makes me feel like a bad mother but i KNOW i have not give her anything stupid
sorry for long post

and strangley enough it doesnt bother her she isnt in pain with it at all she can eat hot things and cold with no problem.. its really strange why she has it its so annoying

my daughter has the same thing it started with the first tooth coming through the ones at the front(bottom)came through as little triangles was told by my dentist that i was giving her fizzy drink which i wasnt i got so angry after months of this so i changed dentist my new dentist gave her an xray and found that her teeth were dying from the inside out she is five now she as had none taken out as they have just disolved(only 8 though)she has 3 month check ups on the plus side her second teeth are coming through and they look normal and healthy also my daughter as never had any pain which im so surprised about but the dentist did tell us that the teeth are dead so pain is very ulikely as the nerve died long before the tooth please dont think that you have giving her anything i use to think that and i have got myself so upset but really its just something that as happen with no reason

Thats really weird, there must be some deficiency in her milk teeth. I cannot believe that what she is eating has contributed to teeth having to be removed based on what you said.

Poor wee soul.

Im so happy someone else has similar experience as it makes me feeli so awful her teeth are triangle shaped at the front , my dentist is so caught up on the fact that i must of caused it, that she wont belive anything else and try find another reason, my daughter had all her teeth and 5 are affected but she would need eight out to keep her teeth semetrical, but they have not done an xray as yet or blood tests
thankyou so much for your reply..

I don't know if this helps anyone...(maybe you already know!)

BUT my HV told me off this week for using baby toothpaste... apparently because we don't have flouride added to the water in our area baby toothpaste doesn't contain enough flouride and I have to use adult toothpaste on Evie

we use oral-b tooth paste for her age range its what the dentists recomended, weve always used this one.

your welcome i know what its like to be in your shoes i hope you get somewhere with your dentist try pushing for an xray to be done

could u ask ur dentist if u can try fluoride supplements?

i could do..would that help?

i think alot of my daughters problems is coz i had cholostasis when pregnant as her eyes are bad her teeth are bad the poor thing. theres no reserch for it to back me up but i belive thats the problem..and they didnt know when my diue date was i had to guess that i was 37 week wen they brought her out

funny you should mention that cos my daughter started wearing glasses at 2 she would be looking for stuff and it could of jumped up and hit her on the nose but she couldnt see it i thought she was being silly and having me on but shes very short sighted and as to wear glasses my daughter also has other problems one is she phases out its sort of like one minute she could be talking to you then shes in a world of her own its very weird its like she as to reboot herself also her long term memory is fantastic short memory is another story so i wonder if they missed something when i was carrying her they wont do tests on her as they never seen this happen with her

my daughter is like that where she talks to you then stops her consentration span is like a fishes lol,, her long term memory is amazing too but like you said short term isnt as good, glad you postedsounds like ours girls have same problems.. im always at the doctors and hospitals lol
