I had my baby on the 4th of August. Midwifes and staff at hospital had minimal intervention as I am an experienced breastfeeder and this is my 5th baby.

He was a chunker at 9lb 6oz. Not sure about your hospitals, but here they no longer weigh them before they are discharged. Plenty of wet and dirty nappies and seemed to be feeding well.

Anyhow, got home two days later , and he following day the midwife visited. He had lost weight and was down to 8lb 8oz. She wasn't alarmed as he had plenty of good nappies and it's normal to loose, I was a bit engorged though.

She visited again two days after and my poor wee man was 8lb 3oz. I felt awful, what was I doing wrong. I'd never experienced weight loss like this with my other children. Couldn't work out what the problem was. She checked him and the wee soul was tongue tied. It was a very mild case, but she said if could be the cause of the weight loss as he wasn't able to get the hind milk effectively.

After much deliberating and me beating my self up we decided to get it cut. I was really upset at the thought of it, but honestly girls was nothing , wasn't even as bad as the heal prick test.
Just one snip there and then and it was done.

2 weeks on and my baby was weighed this morning he is back at his birth weight.

Just wanted to tell our story, hopefully will help someone out there. If you feel feeding isn't going that great, have a look under their tongue

I was told it could be painful to feed a baby with tongue tie, I wasn't in pain but It may be the answer for someone

Glad you got the help you needed K. Gorgeous sleeping little baby!

My boy was also tongue tied, I highly recommend getting it done too. For me feeding was excruciatingly painful so I did know something was up in addition to the weight loss :)

xx

Glad you're sorted, he is gorgeous! My DD is tongue tied, (so am I) we didn't have hers cut and it was pretty painful to feed her in the early days! Having it cut was never really mentioned by MW or HV although I have since found out it would have been possible. Weird how things differ from area to area.xx

Oh blimey , so pleased you got it snipped and now feeding and weight gain is back on track. Loads of the august mummies have had tongue tie babies, a lovely lady I spent time with in transitional care in hosp was there as her chunkier baby couldn't maintain his body weight as he was feeding like a smaller baby and they were waiting for approval to get it snipped, it caused him so much stress and crying as he was hungry!
