I wasn't aware that it went on but I suppose in our culture were not aware of the things that other cultures tend to do and can't imagine it going on here. There are heaps of "underground" things that go on here we don't have a clue about, female circumsision as it's known is just one of many I'm sure.

Disgusting though and I really can't imagine since girls have a 'hole' what part they can cut off!! The lips maybe? *shudders* that's usually done under general anasthetic by proper cosmetic surgeons for medical reasons not back street butchers claiming experience in their culture.

In a book I read about a woman's true story , it said they cut off her clitoris with a razor so that she would never feel sexual pleasure. No anasthetic, nothing, just her mum holding her down and some woman mutilating her.

I really am shocked it happens over here...

I knew it went on in other parts of the world. Poor poor girls, how could you let somebody do that to your beautiful daughter, and hold them down while they are doing it?? unbelievable.

when they grow up they still only have a small hole and the future hubby has to ... well I cant even write it but I'll leave it for you to figure out. Bet he aint gentle about it either

Its awful, those poor poor girls it must scar them for life not just physically but on so many other levels. You would think in this day and age barbaric things like this dont happen any more but its a sad truth that they do.

Amnesty international fight against things like this so I think im gonna go off and find a link, maybe theres a petition or something we can sign?

but then again there are alot off Africans coming over to this country now, the old estate i used to live on had loads of new houses built for them. so i suppose its expected for some of the extreme ones to bring their sick twisted ways with them

thats the first one I checked, they did have one but it was for both male and female circumsicion and im not sure where I stand on male circumsicions.

I just dont understand their reasoning behind this at all if im honest, what culture thinking that mutalation it normal? A woman is made the way she is for a reason, I dont see any reason to take that away I think its plain weird!

Its absolutely awful there are 3 types of circumsicion.

1. they just remove the clitoris,
2. they remove the clitoris and labia
3. they take the clitoris, labia and sew up the vagina leaving a small hole to wee through.

Apparently the reasoning behind it is that they believe a girl should be pure when she marries and by taking the clitoris she gets no pleasure from sex. On her wedding night the open the stitches but then sew her back up again afterwards!! There are also some men that believe if there penis touches a clitoris they will die.

They never use anasthetic and the girls often die of hamorraging (sp) and blood poisioning. In Somalia they believe every woman over the ago of 50 has been mulitated. Its been banned in the UK since 1985 but the girls are taken back to Africa to be done. God love them they do it anytime between the ages of 3 to 18.

I was listening to this on LBC talk radio this morning and they had a lady from Somalia on who had had it done by her mother and sisters back "home"
None of her other female relatives or friends have had it done and she was saying that she was so scared to even be talking about it but they pinned her down when she was little and did it during the summer holidays.
She was "pure" on her wedding night and her husband was allowed to open the stitches on that night and on the other nights she conceived her 2 children.
She had no pleasure from sex at all and it was never her husbands aim to please her just to procreate.
She had her clitoris removed and her labia sewn up with a very small hole for urine and AF to come out and that was it.
Was heartbreaking listening to her talking about her baby girl that was 6 months old as her husband wants her done and she didn't, although he said even if she doesn't agree he will take the baby back "home" and have his mother do the "procedure"

Its more common then people realise, my cousin is a youth worker in london and has known young girls she has come across having had the procrdure done.The first time she met a girl of 14 who had it done, she said she had to go to the loos to cry herself sick it made her that upset.

I understand that its part of their culture, but if rthey could csee through our eyes how barbaric it is then they would stop it.

This is child abuse. It is not an attack on anyone's culture, it is an attack on anyone who commits this horrendous abuse of children."

That was a quote from the article and I agree, why would someone mutilate their daughter for culture and anyone caught doing it should be locked up and educated.

Poor poor girls. How on gods earth could you hold down your child or take them to have it done, its beyond belief. I cant even get the guts to take isla for her MMR!

As for the woman whose husband wanted thier daughter done, id take her and do a bunk.
