This is my hospital!!!!!

 Flaming Nora, do you think it's too late to change hospitals? Or is there another one near you?

omg, thats scary, do you think its too late to switch hospitals?

No there are none close by! And this is the biggest in the area by a long shot!!!!!!!

The ward was filthy when I had to stay there becasue of my BP!!!

I am so worried about this now! I am not letting anyone near me until they have washed their hands and I WILL be taking FLash wipes in with me!!!!!!!!!

I know it's scary, but will they let you have a home birth?

Might be an option......................... at least you know what has been where and it's clean!

xxx

No - there are "staffing issues" and I am having a big baby!!!!

Surely regardless of staffing issues, it's your right to have a home birth if you want one? It's not your fault they haven't got enough staff!

Is there a local birthing unit at all thats MW lead?

Tan x

The birthing unit is in the same building as the rest of the maternity services and is very much run as part of a whole...

Yes I could fight for a home birth if I wanted but I have been advised against it as the staffing issues could create "serious risk if anything were to go wrong" and they couldn't guarentee the support" and the fact that I am having a big baby I have been advised against it... :(

I saw this on the news aswell, its very scarey, just get yourself home as soon as you can and yeah insist they wash there hands.

Just insist they are scrupulously clean hun!

And take those flash wipes for sure. Also get some antibacterial handgel and make sure they use it everytime they come within a yard of you!

ditto with the hand gel, consultants are by far the worst for not using it if you take close notice of the staff, most of the midwifes are very scrupulous but consultants seem to go from one patient to the next without so much as a wipe

Yeah it is always the doctors you have to worry about!

I once worked on a ward where a Dr catheterised a man and then came and took 2 pieves of toast of a platewithout washing his hands! YUCK!

Yes I will have flash wipes and alcohol gel and I will instruct hubby to be shitty with anyone he hasn't seen washing their hands! Also this will put me off having an epidural as I want to be home asap so positive mental power to do this on just gas and air!!!

If thats not an incentive I don't know what is! lol

i take it your a nurse lyndsey?

one good thing though, or maybe a bad thing in some cases.... you know what to look out for with regards to ward hygiene etc, and are probably a lot more aware of the medical procedures than other patients.... at least thats what i thought, though i am community based so not too much of a problem to me.

When i was on my induction, one of the speakers was talking about clinical cleanliness, they did a survey in the canteen with doctors and consultants etc, taking swabs off their hands, and i think it was summat like 85% of the staff swabbed had faeces, urine, blood traces and bacteria known to cause contagious infection on their hands... and they were about to eat  always made me think about it loads, having to deal with that sorta stuff, but then again, how many patients and their visitors actually bother with the hand gel thats provided on the wards to minimize it anyway?

Yuck that whole catheter thing is rank bleurgh!!!!

You can do it on gas and air Lyns, your hardcore

oh lyns what a shock. i bet you though the staff at that hospital are now being more vigilant than ever due to whats happened and it will actually be safer and cleaner than what the rest of us will in for. try not to worry - i know thats easy for me to say

Yeah I Am a nure although I too am working in the community now.. as an OHA.

Yes my mum has said that the North Staffs is now one of the safest hospitals in which to have your baby as they have to be 110% on top of infection control and I do see her point...

But it is still scary eh!

That on top of incompetent Dr's who don't give a shit! Never mind though thats another story!
