Finally getting round to writing my birth story.
I woke on wednesday 22/08/12 and had what I thought felt like very mild contractions but no other symptoms. I sent DD off to school and OH off to work, with strict instructions tokeep his mobile phone handy, lol.
About 10 mins later I went to the toilet and had a bloody show. Sorry if TMI but the amount of mucus was shocking, I really never expected that. Think I went through about half a roll of toilet paper!!
At this point my contractions were getting slightly stronger but not yet painful and I was running around the house cleaning like a mad lady! Around 10.30 OH called to say he was coming home as he was worried about me being alone.
By the time he got back half an hour later, my contractions were stronger and coming every 6 mins, lasting about 30 seconds. Then at 12 noon they just completely stopped again, for about half an hour. When they returned they were much stronger, but quite erratic, some coming every 2-3 mins, then not having another for 9-12 mins. I phoned triage who said to go in when they lasted a minute or over and were more regular. So I spent the next couple of hours over my birthing ball, breathing through each one.
Suddenly at 4 pm they just got much, much stronger and came every 2 mins. I was really struggling with the pain. We decided to head to the hospital as we didnt want caught in rush hour traffic. Well it took me another half hour to get out the house, as I kept having to get down on my hands and knees with every contraction.
The car journey was horrendous, my poor OH just kept talking away trying to keep my mind off the contractions for me and I was making the most annoying noises as I tried to breath through them. At this point I could feel the head really low down and was fighting the urge to push.
We arrived at the hospital maternity assessment unit at 5.20 pm where I was examined and told I was 6 cm dilated! 6 bloody cm, I had been 3 cm dilated when I went for my sweep a couple of days before, so 6 cm did not seem much to me and I was not pleased.
The midwife went away to phone the labour ward to tell them to expect me. Suddenly I felt a pop, which I thought was my waters, but turned out to be more mucus and the urge to push was unstoppable. I was whisked to the labour ward, where I was told I didnt have time to change into a gown as they could see the babies head, still in the membrane sac and I had to start pushing.
I had a senior midwife and a student who was going to do the delivery so I got a running commentary of everything that was happening as the midwife explained to the student what she should be doing. So with just gas and air and half an hours pushing our beautiful little girl Eliza was born at 18:13 weighing 8lb 5oz.
I needed stitches for a second degree tear, but tbh they havent caused me any pain at all. Due to the time she was born I had to stay in hospital overnight, but got home the next afternoon. Introducing her to my 12 year old DD is a moment I had been looking forward too and will never forget, amazing!
She is absolutely perfect and has made our wee family complete. We couldnt be happier!!
Not sure how to put photo on but will try and post one when I work it out!
