Hey all,

I have been working at my secondary school now for over 3 years and am on M4 (I bring home about £1570 a month (I do not currently pay into a pension).

I am pregnant and will take maternity leave at Feb half term. I know that I will get 90 % pay for a couple of weeks and then 50% pay plus stat. mat. pay.

My question is a bit complicated, when it says 50% pay will that actually be 50% of what I bring home a month? I.e. about £785 a month (plus extra SMP)? The reason I ask is because a friend recently told me she had had 2 unpaid days off to attend a wedding but because of some weird ways its worked out she actually lost hundreds of pounds. I need to budget because I am in a financial agreement and just want to know what I can expect to bring back per month in reality. If anyone knows or even better has been in similar circumstance I would really apprecaite the help.

Thanks,

K xxx

I just checked with a pregnant teacher friend of mine and it seems for teachers the situation is the same as for most pregnant ladies. Maternity pay (whether statutory or contractual) tends to be worked out but calculating your pay as being the average pay earnt in the 8 weeks before starting maternity leave so don't take any unpaid leave (or anything else that will dock your pay such as salary sacrifice) in those 8 weeks or you will loose out on maternity pay.

I am a teacher but unfortunately can't help all that much! I'm lucky that a friend I work with is also on the same grade as me and works 3 days a week which I am hoping to do so she has been helping me work out what I will end up earning. I need to start investigating child tax credits and things. Hoping it isn't too complicated!
